Interesting numbers, but it would be helpful to know how those figures were developed.
Kentucky's value up 40% in one year, Carolina's value down 35%., with no mention as to how or why.........strange.

Those listed below the **** line are below the 65th position that usually denotes P Conference earnings and here is used to denote those schools that should have an economic impact greater than 66th position. While the SEC is 3rd overall it should be noted that we are the only P conference with no schools falling below the P5 line.

Noteworthy is that half of the PAC schools fall below the line. Just another data point for how much they are lagging the other P schools and P conferences.

The list about basketball valuations. My question was, what formula did the writer at the Wall Street Journal use to create the list.

Now go to the list on football valuations that I have pinned at the top. Oklahoma 1 billion. Texas 1.2 billion. With basketball targets we are talking nickels on the dollar by comparison to football valuations.

The goal should be to take the football candidates that can add the most hoops value too. Kansas is not one. Neither is Duke. It does however make Louisville potentially more attractive doesn't it? North Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma are still very safe bets.

The money side is what puts it into perspective. Basketball has value, but only as a complement. Although I'd argue that in a world where the Power leagues are running the Tournament, and with perhaps a few adjustments to how the regular season operates, those numbers could shoot up a good bit. They'd never be in line with football, but it might not be as thorough a rout.

Interesting numbers on non-P5 schools that are in the top 65 of the basketball values. The first one that shows up is Dayton at #21 which is fairly high. SDSU is the last one, but I included Cincinnati at #70 as a point of reference.

* denotes FBS football

Numbers are in millions:

#21 - Dayton = 88.4
*South Florida = 83.7
Marquette = 71.9
Xavier = 70.5
*UConn = 57.9
Gonzaga = 57.9
VCU = 56.9
Villanova = 50.5
Wichita State = 48.9
*Memphis = 48.1
Georgetown = 47.9
St. John’s = 45.2
*San Diego State = 37.8

#70 *Cincinnati = 32

In the event we added Texas as a partial, I thought it might be interesting to look at potential affiliate members. I doubt we'd move on the ones that play FBS football, but there are a few here that could make for an interesting partner. If they were being paid commiserate with their role as opposed to full members then it might be worth a look.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if it has to do with the volatility of the sport.

There's more decentralization in college basketball, more player turnover, inconsistent TV exposure, and more variance with how teams perform from year to year. That and so much of the economic power runs through the Tournament that the individual schools can't always act in their program's best interests.

Playing devil's advocate: Kansas basketball is more valuable than WVU football. I don't think we should be adding WVU, but like other categories, I think strong basketball lifts a candidacy.

There are several reasons I'm good with Kansas despite the fact their football isn't great and likely never will be.

Basketball is a part of it, but mostly it's that KU is a flagship in a brand new state. They're not making any more of those. It's also AAU and that helps our cred.

Also, assuming we're adding Oklahoma then putting Kansas in there creates a nice Midwestern grouping. Oklahoma and Missouri will feel more at home. And I would bet Arkansas would be pleased with the reduced travel.

We'll most likely have to take Oklahoma State to get Oklahoma. If Texas wants to come along as well and doesn't insist upon Tech then Kansas should be a natural 4th. If Texas insists upon Tech then we need to do some thinking. With Texas, A&M and Tech in hand T.C.U. holds little value, as does Baylor. Kansas State and W.V.U. do not bring enough value. Would Iowa State be out of the question? Since we are the SEC, probably. But if Kansas breaks the Southern mold would that make a difference?

Here's the thing. We can take 4 and have room for 6 from the ACC someday. It would even be better to take just 2 and save 8 places for the ACC. I think all of that will enter into the thinking. Slive said no limit as long as it makes money. There's a strong possibility that if we land Texa-homa nobody else could add to our revenue unless we added Ohio State and Notre Dame. So, nobody.

Oddly the best possible thing for the future stability of the ACC might well be an SEC with Oklahoma and Texas in it.

Okay, let's do a little comparison with both football and basketball valuations:

1. Texas (FB) $1,243,124,000 / (BB) $78,658,000
2. *Oklahoma (FB) $1,001,967,000 / (BB) $51,865,000

Exactly! What's more is that OSU is strong, not great, but strong in all of its sports programs.

I think this should clearly paint why W.V.U. isn't going to be in this picture. Why Georgia Tech probably won't be either. And Louisville as strong as their hoops may be falls flat on football valuation although their performance has been good. It also clearly shows why Virginia Tech is the more viable sports product than Virginia (although the academic aspect is clearly in Virginia's favor). And since Duke and North Carolina are a likely package, N.C. State may be the most economical way to land that state. And it also shows why Clemson and Florida State, while not new markets, and certainly not the preferred additions, are serviceable products to have.

In this scenario, the SEC may actually be better off letting the Big 10 move first? If the Big 10 grabs UVA/Duke it gives us an excuse to grab the other schools (Tech/State).

On the other hand, it may also indicate the status quo is more likely than we think.
