RE: 1/31 AAC Basketball Games
I'm really interested to see this matchup as Houston typically trots out 3 guys 6'1 onto the court. Will Evans shadow Gray? I've only seen Houston for spurts this year. Do they have anyone other than Gray that can get to the rack and finish? Is Corey Davis mainly a spot up shooter? UC's defense against guards this year has been superb, so this will be a very interesting matchup.
I imagine Houston will see a bunch of post ups to Clark/Washington and some curl screen action to get Evans the ball close to the hoop. He's a lot bigger than Houston's guards and can elevate over them.
Considering this game is at home, I anticipate a 10-15 point win for UC but this could finally be the game where Gray actually does something productive against UC's defense.

The Memphis / USF game should provide a good gauge of the progress made (if any) by the Tigers since the early part of the schedule. Progress is indicated by a Tiger double digit victory, IMO.

I agree we look better, but the game result will tend to confirm or annul our assessment.
Last season ended on a whimper. We lost six out of the last ten regular games - including a 41 point final game pounding by SMU.

Houston realizes potential, gets off to an early lead and hold off the Cubkittens for a W.

If Houston plays to their potential, they can win. They gotta play vicious defense like they did against WSU in Houston. Looking forward to this one.

corey shoots a lot but isnt a "post up" shooter, he can create is own shot, he has the best defense and the best handles on the team, he doesnt drive too often because of his size but push come to shove he will take you to the hole (hit the dagger vs wsu on a drive)..he is the early favorite for our best player next year
galen is slasher, he can also get to the rim, but teams know he cant shoot so they actually leave him open on shots, and never let him drive
and your whole game plan seems to be based on last years team...last year you put your best defensive payers on rob and dotson the entire game because no one else could score...im not sure how that works this year ..this year we are 10 deep and only 3 of the 10 cant score...last year you used your big men to guard our guards..this year 3 of our bigs have had major scoring games this year. im not sure if you'll have the luxury to to put clark on gray or corey
this game is really interesting to me
im really hoping justinhub shows up during the game or after, between him, you and jerry talking about how you knew FOR SURE houston would be trash without dotson, this is the game i was looking forward to the most all season...

I never said Houston would be trash. I said I was skeptical they would be an NCAAT team because they didn't have anything returning that impressed me other than Gray (and sometimes Davis). It appears Corey Davis was an impact signing and some of the big men have helped anchor the first solid defense of Sampson's tenure.
And you guys aren't better because you have a more diverse offensive attack (offense by Kenpom is actually 2 points worse per 100), it's because you have a great defense this year (#29 on Kenpom).

CBS Sports Network shoots and scores. Houston-Cincy is one of the best match ups of the night, along with Purdue-Maryland and Louisville-Virginia.

its both (technically its probably the drastically improved rebounding numbers)..but between offense and defense imo its more the diverse offense especially the addition of post presence...look at any common opponent from last year, we scored way more this year than last..and almost all are better this year than they were last year
almost all our losses last year we held them to the 70s, a few in the 50s and 60's and still lost. no one really just embarrassed us on offense (which has actually happened this year)..it was the narrow offensive skillset that lost us games ..limit gray/dotson and you had a great chance to beat us
this is why this game is so interesting to me...no one has really shut us down on offense this year.. all the 4 teams that beat us had crazy offensive showings themselves. i don't see cincy putting up crazy offensive numbers on us. this will be a test to see how much our offense improved
also the debate in preseason wasnt about if houston was a ncaa tourney team, you guys said we werent top half in the league...you said you couldn't put us any higher than 6..justin had us 7th, that we werent very good and couldnt replace dotson...and he came back to reiterate that we were trash when we lost to drexel

I'm not going to go back and look at my preseason picks but I'm assuming I had Houston fighting for fifth and that was under the assumption UCF would have Fall/Taylor and SMU would have Foster.
Either way, looking forward to the game on Wednesday. UC hasn't played anyone with a pulse in a while.

you had us below temple too at 6 (you had us battling for 6 or 7 with uconn)..to be fair to you, you said 4 was maybe possible for houston if davis stepped up and some of the new players turned out all right (justin was the one adamant that we would suck for sure)
also foster was injured 3 games ago, houston was higher in the standings before he was lost...and ucf's problem isnt tacko or taylors injury but the fact none of them can shoot..they dont have anyone to replace the production of matt williams..they wouldnt have finished very high even if they had everyone healthy.
Houston would have still likely been pushing for third even if everyone was healthy

Another collapse would be a bad sign and last year's kind of did come out of no where.
Seems this team had a little more will to win then interest in showing individual talent like last year's did. We will see if they can make a push for the nit or more unlikely a run at the tournament. The remaining schedule isn't extreme and the opportunities are there to win.
USF should be a good game to find a groove in even though the bulls have been playing much better. Something that concerns me with Tulsa as we seem to let some guy have career nights against us regularly.
