Grim Reaper
Got a notice on Facebook today from Patti Louwerse that David passed away on Sunday, apparently very suddenly and unexpectedly. Dave played basketball during the Bob Polk/Mike Schuler era, and after that worked on the basketball and football stat crews for many years. Per Patti, arrangements are pending.

RE: Grim Reaper
Very sad news. I had heard his health hadn't been great the past few years but it's still a shock to hear the news.
I'll try to see if we can have a moment of silence to honor him at the next home men's basketball game.

Dave Louwerse - played at Rice for four seasons (1974 through 1978) and then he did the official book at the basketball games for years after that. He held the Rice single-season block record for a long time - not sure if he still has the record or not for that stat.

Strange, as i overlapped 3 of those years and don't remember him. The stars on those lousy Polk teams were guards Darden and Reynolds.

He's still tied for blocks in a single game (6), is third in blocks in a season (40), which was in 1975, his freshman year, and that mark still stands as the most blocks in a season by a freshman.
Blocks in a game:
6 - Omar Oraby vs . Marshall (J7, 2012)
6 - Michael Harris vs . Murray State (F19, 2005)
6 - Dave Louwerse vs . Texas A&M (J21, 1975)
Blocks in a season:
1 - 54, Omar Oraby, 2012
2 - 45, Yamar Diene, 2003
3 - 40, Dave Louwerse, 1975

RE: Grim Reaper
I was just a fan in the stands, can tell you that Dave Louwerse was an excellent player. He could fill it up from the corner and play the good D. I don't have the stats handy but think he was an impact player pretty much his entire Rice career, got a lot of playing time. WG mentioned Elbert Darden, he was definitely the best player of that specific era. Smooth scorer. Two players from slightly earlier vintage 70s who we enjoyed watching were Scott Fisher and Perry Gaudet.
