Honestly I would have promoted Whammy. He gets a ton of blame he doesn't deserve for the way the coots fell but when your head coach only pays lip service to recruiting you don't tend to attract the kind of athletes you need to compete in the NFL

or made an offer to Scott Shafer. Surely Louisville can out-pay MTSU and for all his faults as a HC he's a solid DC.

or take a chance on a couple up and comers like Newberry at Kennesaw State or Cooper at Austin Peay.

Any of the above would have been better than Van Gorder considering none of today's recruits can recall a time when he fielded a decent defense and all put out a much better effort at recruiting.

I was thinking Vic Koenning, defensive coordinator, Troy. He put together a top 25 defense there last season & has ACC experience.

Since you mentioned recruiting, Cort Dennison our LB coach was our top recruiter & is the biggest loss on this staff. Bringing in a high level recruiter maybe even more important than bringing in a high level DC.

Vic Koenning's defenses at Carolina were beyond terrible.

The pickings were a bit slim. I doubt Louisville was offering Granthem type $ with the impending NCAA sanctions looming for around $15 million along with the Pitino & Jurich lawsuits. We don't know how the new leadership at the UofL sees athletics as well, what kind of priority it will get.

As an edit point, I think Pitrino & Shafer would had been butting heads way to much for that to be successful.

While not the best time to be hiring a DC, there were several realistic options I would have been more excited by. I still think this will be better than Sirmon, but like last year I am coming in underwhelmed with the DC hire and hoping I'm pleasantly surprised.

05-stirthepot If this turns out to be another bad hire, it will question Petrino's judgement ability. Only time is going to answer this question. 07-coffee3

This thread has the wrong title. It should be "Louisville hires old, recycled DC retread"

Louisville completes its staff with Grady Brown. He will be a defensive assistant & recruiting coordinator.

Grady Brown

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cardchr...rady-brown

”The makeup of his staff over the years has shown his loyalty to those guys, which is hard to find in this profession,” Brown said. “The relationship I have with Coach Ward - someone I’ve known since I was 16 years old – was something that was intriguing about this job. Hiring a successful coach like Brian VanGorder to run the defense, someone who has had success at all levels, was a plus for me in taking advantage of this opportunity.”

Brown’s troops, led by cornerback Jimmy Legree, cornerback Victor Hampton, and safety Brison Williams, ranked third in the SEC and 12th in the nation in pass defense in 2013, allowing 196.2 yards per game through the air. With Legree and Hampton both picking off three passes, South Carolina finished second in the league and 13th in the nation in interceptions with 18.

During his first season with the Gamecocks, Brown tutored safety D.J. Swearinger, who captured second-team all-SEC honors in 2012. Safety T.J. Gurley earned a spot on the SEC all-Freshman squad despite missing part of the season with a knee injury.

Prior to his arrival in Columbia, Brown spent two years as the Southern Miss cornerbacks coach. During the 2011 campaign, Southern Miss was No. 7 nationally in pass efficiency defense (108.47 rating) and set an NCAA record for interceptions returned for touchdowns with eight. As a unit, the Golden Eagles finished the season as a top-30 defense.

Brown came to Southern Miss after spending the previous year and a half working in the strength & conditioning area and assisting as a defensive intern at LSU, where he helped tutor NFL first-round pick Patrick Peterson and third-round pick Chad Jones along with free agent signees Danny McCray and Chris Hawkins.
