Unrelated but what has happened to Indiana basketball? There's no reason for them to be so bad.

NIT picked up two AQ's last night with Rider and UNCA. MAAC's AQ is going to a sub-.500 team with Quinnipiac and St. Peter's in the final. You hear that, MEAC and SWAC? One of you guys might be off the hook for the play-in!

Fun fact: Except for the first year of the modern play-in game (2001) there’s always been one team in that round from the HBCU conferences, but they’ve never both been in. I’m guessing it’s an optics thing, perhaps an informal agreement with the two conferences?

Bye bye at-large bid. The field is as weak as ever. Maybe Temple can still sneak in.

Keep an eye on this midnight Saint Mary’s game.

Trailing 6-25 10-seed Pepperdine 19-4. Still very early.

And just like that, a 19-3 run gives Saint Mary's the lead.

If SMC loses this, they're just lucky it's weak at-large field otherwise they would slide out the bracket or at least into the First Four, which they may do anyways.

Realistic Mid-Major At-Large Bid Candidates
Louisiana Lafayette just had their argument for at-large crushed.

Better for that to happen now than next week.

If SMC isn't careful, they're gonna slide out the bracket.

SMC avoids sliding out of the field of 64, one way or the other. They should be in no matter what now.

If Saint Mary’s hadn’t survived, their RPI would’ve plummeted to 52.

And no chance for an at-large but Northern Kentucky is done.

Horizon #1 seed has lost in quarters all 3 years of Motor City Madness. Before then, the 1-seed would host their games.

Butler is a flea and Butler just built their brand on unheralded players that work hard and do things "The Butler Way." Indiana still gets the overwhelming majority of the players it wants from Indiana. There's no reason for them to be so mediocre so often.

Not an AL contender but that move to the Big Sky is already paying dividends for Idaho. They're a serious threat to win the auto-bid.

Yeah...this is the reality with the good WCC schools. You pretty much HAVE to win good non-conference games and basically go un- or nearly unblemished in the conference...the alternative is unimpressive.

SMC, even before these games, was a lock for the tournament, but a lock at, what...the 10-line? That's bubble. Heck, that's close to last-in. Z-E-R-O doubt in my mind a loss would have put them on the line against the last-in's, if not worse.

Felt the same way about Ziggy-Zaggy...if SMC beat them both times this season heading into this, Gonzaga's on the bubble.

Heck, MTSU lost over the weekend...that probably dropped them a line or two.

Something just doesn't seem right in the non-major realm. There's just no room for error. And parity in mediocre and bad conferences can make matters worse. It's no wonder Gonzaga's begging to bolt...they don't need this stuff every year. I mean, heck, imagine the runner-up to the title, bringing back some of the same guys...they do well, but don't win the big games, but do win the others, and your numbers stink. That's tough on the kids...that's tough for the coach to bring kids to the program. No thanks.

Well the A10 has two teams pretty well locks for the tourney. In Lunardi's latest Bracket, SBU is up to a 10 seed is not one of the last 8 in. Coupled with URI as an 8 seed. If someone else comes out of the A10 tourney, looks like the conference would likely get 3 teams in.

I wouldn't feel so safe. If SB loses to Davidson(the most likely thing)- that's not going to be viewed as a good loss by any stretch. If this committee goes to the metrics- SB is in trouble- their advanced metrics predictive ratings are over double their resume rankings. And if SB loses to Richmond on Friday, it's definitely all over.

There isn't much of a difference at all from 35 on down. Definitely not enough to say that you're safe yet.
