Our best players in the NFL were not high touted coming out of high school...Football is a game that you can develop much later on, its not like basketball.....Forrest Lamp was a 3 star, Taywan wasn't rated or if he was, he was a 2 star, Jack Doyle was a walk on not rated, Tyler Higbee was a 3 star, Doughty 3 star, White not rated, George Fant didn't even really play college football....I put much more stock into basketball rankings....

Since we still have Sun Belt trolls over here, this is a little factoid for them. The Top 7 recruiting classes in CUSA would have had the #1 class in the Sun Belt according to 247.

CUSA Top 7
FIU 168.69
Marshall 168.09
LA Tech 162.20
WKU 154.77
USM 154.63
FAU 152.66
UTSA 150.07

Sun Belt Top Class
GA Southern 146.64

You can drop Western to 7th with a 148.56. Western's class list 3 players who did not sign and not expected to sign with Western. All three were 3 star players...#2 and #7 and the other around #18.

There's a class calculator that you can add or remove players https://247sports.com/college/western-ke...ts/Preview

Terez Traynor 0.8466
Troy Ingle 0.8339
Roderic Forts 0.8013

No one above Western has a unsigned player listed in their class and I only checked the 3 below and no unsigned players

I asked this question on Western's message board but would like to get some other opinions on this...below is the question(s)

What's more important the number of stars a player has or the NA. pos. rank?

Other wise if player 1 was a 3 star player and had a NA. POS. Rank of 210 in one class and player 2 with a NA. POS, Ranking of 125 and a 2 star in another class.

The 3 star is the #210 best player at his position and the 2 star is #125 at his... Which one of those should be the better player to recruit? Do you go with the stars or get the best player you can at the position needed?

Oh, so like Courtney Lee who was 3* or Jeremy Evans who was 2* coming out of high school... 07-coffee3

You clearly don't understand that recruitment ratings are only projections of collegiate success based upon one's performance in high school. Just as a college looks at high school performance, the NFL/NBA look at collegiate performance. You shouldn't be putting any stock into these high school ratings for either football or basketball as a predictor for professional success.

Outside of the top 15 or so players basketball its a crap shoot players are rated more so on athletic ability than basketball skills. A player who's 6'6 or 6'7 and with a strong built and quickness or jumping ability can over power the kids play against in high school.

With that they get away with not having to develop "basketball skills" so a lot of times those higher recruits get to college and they are playing against players just as strong or can leap or know how to play team defense.

So now the one thing that they did very well....over power players. They no longer can get away with that. While a lesser known player with less athletic ability developed basketball skills while in HS. They had to figure out ways to overcome taller, stronger players. They developed how to get their shot off over those players....

their skills translate better and quicker to the college game

While the superstar who drove to the goal and jumps over the smaller players in high school for 90% of their scoring. No longer can do that and now must develop a shot to go along with their athletic ability.

I'd definitely get the best player you can at the position needed. In my opinion, two of the tougher positions for G5 programs to recruit are the OL/DL. And if you look at this recruiting class, the G5 doesn't get as many highly-rated OT/DT as we do at WR/RB for example. So if you have 3* WR at #210 and 2* OT at #125, I'd recruit the OT over the WR; especially if it was a position of need and you've already have a good running core.

Adam Fuller who was just finally named DC said yesterday on Marshall's recruiting special that the staff at Marshall will always take a high profile DL in every case, that they would drop a CB, S or DE for an inside DL player if that player is just to good to pass up.

Marshall signed 4 OT and DL yesterday and unless there are massive injuries they won't have to play as a true freshman and rotate in and out as RS Freshman and be ready for IA football as a RS Soph.

Will always be basketball guys too come out of nowhere based on high school, but the top elite high school recruits usually go on to success in the NBA or at least get a chance, its easier to pinpoint top notch talent earlier in hoops than football....I never said its an exact science I just think stars in basketball is a greater predictor of success than football...

I was just showing your logical fallacy by applying it to basketball. You cited WKU players' low high school recruitment ratings who play in the NFL as evidence that football ratings don't matter and, using the same sample population of WKU, the two players you've had play in the NBA in the past 25 years were also rated low in their high school recruitment ratings.

"Another new NCAA guideline included a hard cap on the number of signees (25) that could be named during a recruiting class, which kept schools from signing more players than they had available initial scholarships.

That meant the Herd had several players sign letters of commitment Wednesday as well, meaning they have committed to joining the program in the future whether over the summer or in the fall.

Cabell Midland running back/linebacker Isaiah Duncan is among about eight or nine players who signed a letter of commitment with the Herd."

Letters of commitment are not binding, NLIs are binding. As thefau posted, there are only 25 NLIs and Marshall announced 24 NLIs issued. I think the rest listed on 247 may be the guys who sign the letters of commitment. Either way they got some good athletes, Doc ain't leaving Florida any time soon.

Marshall officially has signed 24, here is the list from HerdZone.com.

Marshall 2018 Signing Class

Some of those will greyshirt or even blueshirt. A blueshirt in case some don't know is a guy who can come in this year and even play but not count as a recruit until next year.

Greyshirts and blueshirts are just like walk on's they don't count against your class right away.

I keep hearing how we shouldn't pay attention to the star ratings...and there is some truth to that. However...

Not every unrated/2-3 star kid is a diamond in the rough and not every 4-5 star kid is Bo Jackson. There are PLENTY of unrated/2-3 star kids who amount to SQUAT in college. I'd be willing to bet the MAJORITY of unrated/2-3 star kids don't have any success in college. On the flipside, there are PLENTY of 4-5 star kids who have a LOT of success in college and the NFL. I'd be willing to bet that half (if not more) of ALL 4-5 star kids have very successful careers in college and/or the NFL. I'd love to see the actual data behind this.

My point it...the higher a kid is ranked coming out of HS/JUCO the greater the chances are of him being very successful in college/nfl. THAT'S why I pay attention to the star rating.

This would make sense if it weren’t for the fact you use Rivals. Rivals ratings are extra worthless which is why it is pretty much fading away. If it weren’t for ESPN touting their “top 300” they would already be on the darkweb with MySpace, AskJeeves, and AOL.

Coaches/Players/Scouts all have a role in updating their 247 profile. I have no idea how rivals system works but I know it’s highly neglected. Half of the schools have guys who decomitted months ago still on their rivals page, the other half is missing 40% of thier recruits. That alone tells you how much coaches/scouts care about Rivals.

Kiffin did pretty good with the amount of Scholarships we had. If he didn’t go crazy with transfers we would've had more to show on recruiting sites.

Absolutely. There's definitely a lot of validity to the star rating systems. No, not every 4 or 5-star recruit will be highly successful in college, but they do have the most physical ability based on high school performance. If that isn't true, the top programs wouldn't be fighting over them.
