It looks like a similar social type game as bowling and darts. I got heavy into darts some years back until I got tennis elbow from throwing so much. I still love the game.

My parents were in a curling league when we lived in Manitoba. They said they'd just have cases of beer stacked up on one of the lanes on the far ends of the rink.

They'd just put on a good buzz and toss some stones.

We played a version of curling in college. Below freezing, sidewalk, water hose, plastic coated free weights, cases of beer.

I really hope the NHL allows their players to represent their home countries in the next Olympics... Canada would not lose to the Germans, and the US would probably be in contention for a Medal.

We play the Mexican version of horse shoes in El Paso. We call it "washas" (washers). We dig a hole a about 15 feet away and try to toss them in the holes. It's very much like horse shoes in the scoring too. The Washers are about 4 inches in diameter. It's fun and you get a lot of exercise from all the bending down to retrieve them.

Winter Olympics
I like curling, isn’t it basically a cold weather version of shuffleboard?

Remember when shuffleboard lanes were at every townhouse or retirement community? Curling with a stick

U.S. men win the Gold. That could be a huge boost to that 'sport' becoming much more popular here.

I personally would spend my money on an evening learning how to play and giving it a go. It sounds like a great way to spend a summer evening in Houston cooling off. And I'll assume it's a sport that you can drink alcohol while playing, which would make it even more popular for many.

Pretty cool. There was a big thing yesterday about the Panthers HC Ron Rivera at the Charlotte club trying out the sport. Looked like he was having a blast.

RE: Winter Olympics
Games are over - they went off without a hitch in terms of international incidents so that's good.

USA ends up 4th in the medal count but their worst showing in the Winter Olympics since 1998. Norway dominates the medal count. Speaking of Norway, I read recently where Denmark (Norway's southern border) has only had one Winter Olympic medalist in that country's history. They're similar in population to Norway and another fairly wealthy country although they have warmer temperatures and not as many hills as Norway so I guess they have just decided to concentrate their athletes on summer sports.

I think most of Norway's medals are in the skiing sports. Denmark's lack of hills would be a major deterrent. Also the Danish government does not have the oil money to subsidize facilities the way Norway does. I toured the ski jump arena in Oslo last summer. They spent some huge bucks on that thing.

Maybe not during but certainly a few afterwards. All these curling clubs have clubhouses

Plenty of Learn to Curl events in March - and Sharpstown isn't too inconvenient from Fort Bend. A few Rice folks in the club as well, though we haven't quite gotten enough traction to get the college team going.

It's not completely unheard of to have a beer while playing, depending on the facility. Tradition dictates that with winners of the game buy the losers of the match a drink at the end of the game (though I've seen members of this years olympic team take a mid-game broomstacking break).

Same, with the exception of the overtime and shootout of the women's hockey final, and it was only because I got a push notification from the NBC Sports app. I otherwise wouldn't have even known it was on.

See?

Another reason we should be immigrating more folks from Norway.
