RE: Favorite JMU basketball players
First, Willie Davis- If you were to go back through his stats they would look good, not great, except one: his last two years combined, he shot something like 55% from the field as a shooting guard. He was also a lock down defender by his senior year. I still believe that if he had offenses built around him like Hood or Fanning or Curry or even Mosley, he would be considered on of the all time CAA greats.
Twenty-five years later, I still remember a two week stretch where:
1. In back to back games against ODU and Richmond (both were tied with us for 1st) he combined for something like 57 points on like 22-25 from the field (not from the line, from the floor...as a freakin' shooting guard).
2. Then he took on Brian Gilgeous (who beat him out for CAA POY) and American. They defended each other most of the game and played each other basically even for 39 minutes. Down by 2 with around 45 seconds left, Willie scored 6 straight points and had 2 steals for the win.
3. Then against Mason, the team was down by 4 late in the second half until Will scored the last 10 points of the game for either team.
Second would have to be Devon Moore,a true floor general who led us back to the dance. If he had stayed healthy (and not missed those games due to academics), he likely would have been the conference's first 1500 point, 500 rebound, 500 assist player. He also should have been on the all-defensive team.
After that, I have always had a spot for the guys who maybe weren't the most talented, but had great court IQ and grit (Satkus, Ben Louis, Michael Venson because of how after his injury, he found ways to help, Ritter because he improved so much), and those who sacrificed stats for the team (Rowe in the NCAA year, Jeff Chambers,etc.).
Good times.
