RE: Trump budget aims to jump-start construction, cut red tape
I live in Va Beach. Our last Republican Governor oversaw a public/private project to repair and improve several tunnels in our area. As a result, we the citizens pay an outrageous toll on these tunnels. The profits go to a European consortium that funded the project. These tolls are onerous and built in increases guarantee the builders huge profits for years and years to come. I'm not totally against public/private, but it has to be done very carefully. The public will be taking it in the shorts for decades and decades.
Va has one of the lowest gas taxes in the country. I know raising taxes is heresy amongst repubs, but a 1-2 cent increase in gas tax would have made these tolls unnecessary. Fear of taxes resulted in the public getting totally screwed.

Pretty simple reasoning... The federal government will give you this much money but you need to pony up the rest for this highway that resides in your state...

Hey the dems in Minnesota are always trying to build bullion dollar trains "cause the govt is giving some of the money".. But when Trump proposes it they act like a vampire at a garlic farm.

If I had to guess I'd say that this is for the interstate system.

Take the political label off the governor. The things being done are to benefit all. Our bridges and roads are in horrible shape. My hometown just had all the bridges examined in the county. About 98% failed inspection. That's not good. If a bridge fails there'll be a lawsuit that'll cost millions, plus repair.

Now you can put the label back on. Typically a Republican governor spends more on public works than a Democrat. Same with Presidents. During a GOP administration there's more military/government construction funding. During a Democrat administration that cost is cut and put into different programs for assistance.

Oddly under George W. Bush, our embassy program had the cost cut and a typical compound ran about $200 million. Under Obama, they cost $400-$800 million.

Very few states have that kind of money. This isn't going to work unless taxes are raised.

Again.... This is not at all odd or extreme..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Blue...Minnesota)

"The line's cost totaled $715.3 million, with $334.3 million coming from the federal government"

On many projects states are already paying more than 50% of the cost, and in many cases when you're talking roads and bridges the states are already spending a ton of money.

No, the tolls are user fees. It's only appropriate that the people who use the tunnels pay for it instead of the cattle farmer trying to eke out a living in Bluefield who has or will ever use the tunnel.

In case your curious about the embassy costs. The one in London cost the US taxpayer a cool Billion.

https://www.google.com/amp/www.telegraph...sures/amp/

Reason I know is because this one made headlines with delays and compromised materials. I think 60 minutes aired it. I forgot to change the channel after a ball game and caught it. Made me research it more

Internet funding should be increased. Especially in rural areas.

I'm all for cutting red tape and the bureaucratic process that goes into infrastructure spending. I am not for paying for things we can't afford when we're already hopelessly in debt.

Higgs believes the internet is an utility therefore everyone should have the same speeds and price. But unfortunately that's not the case. It's not a utility and rural areas will get it when the internet companies have the funds. Funny thing. When net neutrality began fiber optics was being ran near my parents, it passed it stopped. Talk is now of the work starting back and them getting internet. Odd how that happens.

Internet is a utility. Because it is a common carrier. That is why it should be part of the infrastructure plan.

I'm not posting that only landlines should be part of the infrastructure plan. What I would like to see is a 5G wireless network nationwide. But that still doesn't change the fact that the internet has become or is becoming a utility. When cars that Tesla builds. Have to have regular software updates. Then that is not a luxury item anymore. That's something else. When your health is constantly monitored by your Fitbit and sends daily updates to your healthcare provider. Then that's not a luxury anymore.

A. Owning a Tesla is not a must, it's a luxury.
B. What physician is going to make you purchase a Fitbit? Those are not 100% accurate on anything they tell you in the paperwork. Plus you still have to keep up with your diet.

Your argument is still invalid.

No its not. Tesla is not the only company doing this. They all are either doing this now or soon will. As far as the Fitbit. It won't be your doctor. It will be your healthcare provider that will encourage you to have a device that monitors your health. This will allow us to move from Sickcare. Which we have now. To actual healthcare.

I was actually referencing Nikola's macro side wireless vision....

you'll see 5g one day coupled with fully wireless access as the norm in the not too distant future.....

Higgs is still upset about net neutrality.

I'm game for it. If Spectrum wants to cut me a deal because I'm getting their slowest speed, go for it.

Still not a utility.
