I really wish he would go somewhere else and cut his teeth. Then we can get him when we know for sure we won’t run him out on a rail in 4 years.

Only problem is that if he 'cuts his teeth' at Ole Miss, UT, or UK. Or if he does such a great job, one of the 'big boys' comes calling and we get to wallow in our ineptitude forever.

He's had his chances to cut his teeth here and declined. People wonder if he's willing to put in the long hours it takes to be a successful head coach, I would note that he seems unwilling to even put in the necessary hours just to be considered a serious candidate for a D1 head coach job.

I feel like or at least hope that we would be his dream job so if he’s crushing it at Ole Miss we just take him and he retires here.

What makes you think that there is no other coach out there besides Pennywho can quickly build a winner at Memphis ? What makes you think Penny can do it?

I like this point. Recruits would be the most obvious answer but as we know recruiting isn’t everything. I say fire up the search firm. We’re batting a 1000 with it in football.

Yup. Part of the huge upside.

Theres other coaches that would be great at memphis imo. Penny is a superstar though, and he'll get recruits off the wham. His staff is whats going to be the lynch pin.

I am so on the fence about this...But hey. We have no real information that would count towards a decision.

Depending on which circles we run around in, we hear different stuff.

The key part for me is that the gentleman would not publically comment about Penny’s D-1 coaching ambition without Penny’s approval.

IMO, it is a clear sign the Penny is lobbying for the Tiger head coach position, although I concede I may be reading too much into it.

He's been lobbying for 5 years

If so, I do not recall it broadcasted in such a public manner.

Yea...99% sure. Somebody named the Search Firm in the last thread we brought it up---unless that person didn't know what he was saying.

I've heard it from two different sources now that we used one. lol

Who knows.

I know Penny's dentist. His teeth are cut.

Would y'all feel better if he hired an old washed-up head coach as a mentor/assistant?

Tell him at least one assistant has to have been a mid to high level D1 head coach on a team that made the NCAAs in the past. If Josh had done that, he'd still be here.

Tell Tubby if he resigns after the season we'll hire Saul as head coach if he promises not to do anything or say anything and hires Penny as first assistant. Then if we tank, we can fire Saul, and Penny will have at least one year of DI experience. What's wrong with that?
