Trump proposing to replace a % of food stamps with "Harvest Boxes"
I can't wait to see the deluge of mainstream media idiots calling this "mean" or "heartless"...

Blue Apron style!

1) Obesity is the biggest health concern in our country. Eating cheap, processed foods are a leading cause. It is an epidemic, and our healthcare costs are outrageous as a result.

2) Nobody seemed to be outraged for the past 8 years that our government tried to dictate to us what we could or couldn’t eat or drink.

3) It wouldn’t completely replace food stamps. It would replace a percentage of benefits. It also wouldnt affect all food stamp recipients - only those who receive more than $90.

4) Since it would be “American made” food, it would create jobs and get more people off of food stamps.

5) It could save the country $129 BILLION dollars over the course of a decade.

I don’t see anything wrong with people getting healthier, having more job opportunities, reducing people’s dependency on government programs, and saving the country billions upon billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere, or in the pockets of its citizens.

And before the libs come scrambling in and say "I thought Republicans didn't like the government telling people what to do?!?!?! Hypocrites!!!"
...

I don’t think the government should EVER force ANYONE on things such as the foods they eat, churches they attend, schools they go to, etc. People should be allowed to have a choice, make their own decisions, and live with the consequences.

The only thing about food stamps is - you’re getting money from the government. They are providing the money, they get a say in what you get.

Ok, so now the government is supposed to go shopping for everyone. LOL. My guess is that they'll spend 50 bucks a can for peas. Heck, Trump's government spend 30 million bucks on inedible food for Puerto Rico relief.

Hey if they are qualified to tell each and every american "this is health care plan is good for you and this other one is garbage" surely sending a box of food is something they can manage.

The private healthcare sector isn't really private (its heavily subsidized) and it doesn't compete.

Our grocery industry is a lot better than the government procurement process.

I'd be fine if we just gave them bread, milk, rice, flour, chicken, and a bottle of vitamins.

Food stamps should be enough to keep people from starving to death IMO and nothing more. Want luxury? Pay for it.

RE: Trump proposing to replace a % of food stamps with "Harvest Boxes"
In my guaranteed basic income approach, food stamps would disappear at the federal level but states could run them if they wanted. I'm a little bit torn by that, because I think a way to do it would be for the feds to buy surplus agricultural production at a support price level, and use the production in both diplomacy and food stamps.

Here's what I have in mind, buy up surplus wheat, corn, milk, cheeses, meat, you name it, and use them to stock special commissaries where only food stamps could be used for purchases. This gets them out of lines at grocery stores, where a lot of ill will gets built up. Additional products could be made available to friendly countries or resistance factions in unfriendly ones. You've heard the old story about which wolf will win, the one you feed. So let's feed the side we want to win.

I'm not quite sure how to administer that if food stamps because a state operation. I suppose a realistic approach could be developed.

So is food production.....

Who's to say you don't let the states manage it that way?

I would bet my life you or someone in your family used pell grants while in college. Bet you had no problem with that. Be honest when you answer that.

I personally don't care if it takes you moving next to you job if thats what it took for you to get to work in time. Than to spend the billions of tax dollars it takes to get you there on time. Again I bet you or someone in your family enjoys the government spending those billion and billions and billions each and every year just to make road so you can live where you want.

I personally would rather feed a person a great meal than to make your drive easier. We dont get what we want.
