RE: WTIC radio will not renew contract with UConn athletics
“I have the highest respect for UCONN Athletic Director David Benedict and his goals for the university,” Entercom Sr. VP and Hartford Market Manager Phil Zachary said in the release. “Having grown up in Connecticut, there’s a special place in my heart for UCONN Basketball. However, I couldn’t justify what they were seeking when compared to more successful partnerships Entercom enjoys with elite Power 5 institutions.”

Ouch.

We should all be wary of this. UC should be ok with their radio partner, but you never know when these buyouts occur.

RE: WTIC radio will not renew contract with UConn athletics
Entercom is currently experiencing a stock boost (to ~$10.00 I may add -- how impressive) because of a recent merger with CBS Radio, but keep in mind that this company's stock is off 35% over the past year. I would take no bones from some radio Senior VP, these guys are morons with terrible business sense and wouldn't know a good deal if it kicked them in the nuts.

That's why their companies are being kept alive by a feeding tube and a power outlet.

Connecticut is literally one of the only states in the union in which the comment that Senior VP made makes absolutely no sense at all.

UConn/IMG will soon sign a deal with iHeart radio/97.9-ESPN to broadcast games beginning next season. Deal with WTIC ending after this season.

From high on the AM dial to FM. Sounds like a win for UConn and their fans. Better signal.

Yep and I bet UConn pushed for this and not the other way around. Fans gotta wait until all info is out before freaking out.

ECU has a new FM station 94.3. This has allowed all of our baseball games to be FM, used to be AM. Basketball and football have stayed on 107.9 FM unless on Sunday games then they are on 94.3.

Turns out it was an upgrade. Nice.

RE: Brands starting to nose dive, I see the vast majority of that AAC's brands improving. UConn may actually be the 1 exception.

Not far from AAC free agency... This ESPN broadcasting negotiations with one of AAC's members I find it quite interesting.

They negotiated with iHeart not ESPN.

They need to embrace their new basketball rivalry with ECU more to get their mojo back.

That’s not it at all. UCONN/IMG went to its radio partner and said it wanted FM dial and extensive streaming outlets. It’s current partner Entercom would not give them an FM dial location and has a fairly crappy digital platform. So UCONN turned to iheart media, the owner of another cluster of Hartford/Central CT radio stations, who is willing to carry games on FM and has the iheart streaming platform, largest in the world. They’ll be carried on a station that just happens to pay affiliation fees to run ESPN radio format. It will cut into that format to carry UCONN games and ESPN has nothing to do with this deal, though the affiliate can offer games to ESPN to be carried nationally if ESPN wants them.

Is there any way UCONN can keep its current Iheart/ESPN Eadio contract & keep WTIC also???

WTIC is one of exclusive 50000 watt clear channel Mega AM radio stations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_50...ted_States

It used to be a huge deal to have one in your broadcast network...but not as much anymore with streaming and satellite radio

Id rather be on a strong FM station then a strong AM station, even if the AM station has a stronger reach.

Are you saying that Uconn isn’t far from leaving the AAC? Or do you mean that Uconn is going on it’s own way, away from the aac with its media when you say “AAC free agency”?

I think everything hinges on what Aresco gets for the tv deal soon. If it’s not double or triple the current one does Uconn and Cincinnati stay? Or do they go to the Big East?
The rest of us stay. Maybe Navy & Temple explore options, but the 8 CUSA schools stay together in the AAC: ECU, Memphis, USF, UCF, Tulsa, Tulane, Houston, SMU.

Cincy is going to wait around until the next conference realignment because they are probably the top candidate from the g5. There isn't really a reason to go to the big east for cincy. Basketball is doing great and football will be back in a few years. they should be fine chilling until the next conference realignment. As for UConn I hope we can do the same after we get a new coach. I hope that fixes all of our basketball problems. But if that coaching move fails and we dont get a good enough tv contract from ESPN. We may need to abandon football and bounce to the big east to save basketball. ( I am a huge UConn football fan and they are my only team during the CFB season so it would be the last thing I would want to do but if its the only option then I would be ok with it)
