So, in an effort to delay that decision (and let the class that would be Penny's to deliver choose other schools) they would effectively eliminate the main reason to hire Penny.
They would then accomplish:
1) Firing Tubs w/ only about $6MM left on his contract.
2) Firing Tubs w/little to no doubt and/or argument about the need to fire him.
3) Allow "Penny's recruits" to commit elsewhere so hiring Penny isn't the hot take choice.
This is pretty much why I wouldn't fire Tubby right now. I don't think Penny is the right choice, but if I hire anyone else it's almost guaranteed to be second guessed from the moment it's announced.

Not sure there’s solid proof to show that matters actually.

I think either Damon or Penny would be solid choices. Of the two, I'd prefer Penny due to the ability to immediately excite and (as much as possible) unite the fan base.

Penny is a legend to me, and probably the only athlete where I would still be awed to meet.
Having said that, square this circle:
1. He has humility.
2. He would take the HC, but no assistant gig, with no D1 experience.
I love Penny, but those two lines seem to not match in my reckoning.
That is one of the issues that I have with Penny. It seems like he only wants to be head coach but not an assistant. By that I take it that he's not wanting to put in the work to be an assistant and earn a head coaching job. If he's not wanting to put in the work to be an assistant would he be willing to put in the work to be a head coach? Hiring a guy as a head coach for a college team with no prior college coaching experience rarely if ever turns out well.

I don't think he want to listen to a head coach tell him what to do is more the reason. He's got his own ideas and plans.

Dumbest statement ever made. This thinking got us Tic Price. That was an overwhelming success.
Color doesn't matter, winning does. I don't care if the coach is white, black, yellow, or green. As long as he can get players and win games.
The racial makeup of our city doesn't require a coach or mayor, for that matter, to be African American. It's about who's the better candidate and who's best for the job.

Steve Kerr was never an assistant. And that was a racist, derogatory comment. Folks used to get banned for that.

In fairness, Steve Kerr walked into perhaps the most talented team the NBA has ever seen. When he was out for months, Walton had the same results with GS.
What exactly did he say that was racist? I've read that comment 20 times and still can't figure what you are referring to.

Someone said we should hire a black coach. If they said white, this board would be in an uproar.

Never an assistant, just President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of an NBA team for 7 years...
