Cool, for a second I thought we were at least keeping pace with them..
I rechecked my math and found it to have been faulty.
Hey at least UTEP lost - yea!

This has been excruciatingly ugly, even considering the circumstances.

If there isn't significant improvement next year, we need to cut bait. I think Pera got a shot because it was hoped that he could keep the previous team together. That didn't happen. And now it looks like Pera is having trouble developing the players he does have.

Though I'm not really happy with Karlgaard overall, I can admit that when he has hired from outside, he has picked people that can coach. That much is clear. You can hire from within a program, sure, and schools do that often. But I think Karlgaard went against his usual principles in settling on Pera so quickly.

I really don't think Pera is a bad coach, but I also don't think he's up to the Rice job (which I admit is a real challenge). We don't have time to mess around anymore. Rice needs a modicum of success in revenue athletics, and it needs that success now.

I agree, but I will say the main positive with Pera right now seems to be that we are recruiting well. Which is a huge piece of the puzzle. The basketball side of the equation is not looking good. We will see what we look like when we have a full boat of players next year, but it needs to look a lot better.

We are so bad right now that looking better next year shouldn't even be difficult. Our incoming class is supposedly very good (relatively speaking), so if things don't improve markedly next year, it is going to be a huge red flag.

The good thing is that barring a rash of major injuries, it should be really easy to discern whether things are heading in the right direction or not next season. This should be a no-brainer for Karlgaard one way or the other, and he has to be ruthless this time if we can't get out of the basement in this awful conference.

Also: 82-33... My god. Poor UTEP. The only MBB team in our conference with any real history to speak of...

UTEP won a national title. And Don Haskins was a legendary coach; hugely progressive in his worldview too. Tim Hardaway, Tiny Archibald... I respect UTEP much more in basketball.

It would mean something for our conference for UTEP to be good again.

RE: Rice MBB v WKU
Without doubt the worst performance of the season IMHO. Worse than against UNLV on the road. We were never in the game, getting outplayed at both ends, despite having only 10 TO’s. What bothered me was as some said earlier WKU wasn’t bigger but it seemed that they were. Once again like against Marshall we gave up 3’s while giving up drive after drive to the hoop, points in the paint was 44-24 with a 28-8 edge in the 1st half. Everyone on the floor was able to drive on us.

Offensively we were stuck in a half court game that seemed like we couldn’t take a shot without having to think about it...just a very unatheletic look. Outside of Osborne, Cashaw, and at times Mency we just look like a team that really doesn’t know how to play. Of the underclass players only Osborne looks like a keeper. Meyers, Martin, Adams, and especially Harrison have made little if any progress in their two years at Rice.

I am willing to wait on Pera and staff but concerned that maybe these players recruited the last two years were done so mainly by Pera. The one positive is that the team still hustles and seems to have a good attitude. I thought we could win 10 games this year but clearly that was overly optimistic.

In my opinion, Pera has two more years to get this team to be a respectable “middle of the road” CUSA team. If he can’t get us to that point by then, he needs to go.

The good news is that next year’s team basically trades out Mency for the TCU transfer and 4 incoming freshmen, plus a year of development for everyone else. Almost impossible given that (predicted) turnover and how crappy we have been this year. I want Pera to succeed and think his pedigree of winning HS state championships in 2 big basketball states says he is a quality coach. But need a big bounce-back from this year’s disaster!

My point of reference is 2014-15, the first season with Rhoades.

I was at the game against UTSA at Tudor that season. We had already improved quite a bit from the previous campaign. It was clear that Rhoades knew what he was doing, even before Gearhart started going off. I don't see that same kind of progress with Pera's players. And that is why I think he gets just next year to prove that he can move this program in the right direction.

The counter-point is that most of this year’s team had already been coached by Rhoades/Pera, and so were playing at a higher level coming into 2017-18 than guys like Gearhart and Jackson were going into 2014-15. While none of the returning players have blossomed like Gearhart and Jackson did in 2014-15, Cashaw and Adams have taken the reigns and no one is worse. Rice just lost a ton of talent with the transfers, more than I appreciated coming into the season. Hope next year’s freshmen come in ready to contribute!
