Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships - Day 2
Day 2 begins shortly with event 5 of the Heptathlon (60 meter hurdles). After that, they'll move to the pole vault.

RE: Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships - Day 2
Another disaster for Rice in the Heptathlon, as Charlie Card-Childers apparently goes down after hitting a hurdle. He finished, but got just 1 point. Scott Filip was the fastest at 8.34 seconds, worth 898 points.

RE: Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships - Day 2
1. Filip, Rice 4212
2. Riley, UTSA 4006
3. Hollis, Char. 3506
4. McDaniel, UTSA 3497
5. Jeffers, Char. 3478
6. Okori, La Tech 3234
7. Schulz, Rice 3177
8. Yardley, Char. 3173
9. Patrick, La Tech 3163
10. Card-Childers 2871

Colton Torrance, who no-heighted in the high jump yesterday, withdrew. I'm wondering if Card-Childers will do the same since there's no chance of scoring.

RE: Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships - Day 2
Scott Filip clears 4.30 meters (14' 1¼") in the Heptathlon pole vault for 702 points. Naturally, both Schulz and Card-Childers no-height.

That mark by Scott is disappointing, in that he has cleared 4.90 in this indoor vault.

Looks like no live stream. This is one of the effects of being in a fifth-rate conference.

Finally got it to work.

Coming up next is the men's mile. There was no prelim - we have two Owls - Matthew Murray, who ran a great anchor on the victorious DMR last night and Alex Topini. Koech (UTEP) and Chemadi (Middle Tennessee) should be 1-2 but Murray has a chance for the podium.

RE: Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships - Day 2
Here are the women's standings after the 60H (Rice had no finalists):

1) Middle Tennessee 54
2) UTEP 45
3) Southern Miss 41.50
4) Charlotte 36
5) Rice 26
6) FIU 24
6) Marshall 24
8) North Texas 16
9) Louisiana Tech 15
10) UTSA 11.50
1) Florida Atlantic 9
11) UAB 9

Rice looks like it will finish in 5th - we've got some points with Hannah Jackson in the 60 and 200 and maybe a few in the 3K, but that's about it.

Here are the men's standings after the 60H (Rice had no finalists):

1) Charlotte 88½
2) UTSA 71
3) Louisiana Tech 55
4) Rice 54½
5) Middle Tennessee 50
6) UTEP 33
6) Southern Miss 33
8) North Texas 17
9) FIU 14
10) Western Kentucky 12

With a few points in the 800 and maybe a point or two in the 3K, Rice looks destined for 5th, unless UTEP closes strongly.

What happened. Several years ago, the women won conference championships in cross country, indoor tranck, and outdoor track. Then we seem to have collapsed.

A disappointing 4th place for Hannah Jackson in the 60. Since I have no live stream, I'm guessing it was yet another poor start, since she has more top end speed than the others.

Track and field/cross country --> not a full scholarship sport. You really need a minimum of 35-40 athletes to compete for conference championships. There are 18 scholarships available. Therefore, one must split scholarships, which means families are going to have to come up with $25,000 - $50,000 per year (when getting a partial scholarship) to have their daughter come to Rice (and be academically qualified). If you go to any state school, the academic aid will add to the partial and the athlete will get virtually a full scholarship. That academic aid is not available at Rice.

So basically, Rice has to hit a home run with every athlete, and hope against hope that there are no injuries. Good luck with that.

WRC, it seems to me, that both teams have a lot of DNS or DNF or are not performing up to expectations. Do you have a guess of what is going on.
