I agree, but unsure we get to 20 w/o winning 2 games in the AAC tournament. The coaching and product on the floor is not the problem. The problems are:

1. Recruiting
2. Fan Support (season tickets sold and actual attendance)

These 2 are the lifeblood of the program and the Memphis basketball program has to make money. It really is that simple. If we roll with Coach Smith and that same staff into 2018-2019, especially if they add JUCO's to Vanover (regardless of whether they are good or not), it is going to be U-G-L-Y!

Why lie when it is so easy to verify.

Graduate assistant 2000-2002

Assistant 2002-2008...But hey whatever floats your boat.

Penny is working on his 3rd year as a High School coach.

If Penny is leveraging his players to get this job how is that any different that what Lawson did accept Lawson at least had the humility to accept an assistant coach position?

Clearly you’re bothered by Penny. None of it bothers me one bit. I want players. If Penny can bring them and we don’t do it and someone else does. We will regret it hugely.

I am on the fence about Penny because he has no history...No factual basis that he can succeed...All we have is hope.

But if all you want is players you should not have any problem with hiring Lawson for his boys.

I agree 100%...but if he gets the Tigers to 20 or more, he buys himself another year. We’d look like fools firing a coach 2 years in who wins 20 or more games. He’d get another year and likely make the tournament with a more experienced version of this team if he can keep it together. We maybe make it to the second round. This buys him another year of mediocrity.

Funny, with JP, it was S16or bust. With Tubby, we pray for NIT and NCAAs would be a miracle

Pastner coached here 7 years. Took over the hottest team in the nation. I don’t think a sweet sixteen was unreasonable. He got “fired” due to a downward trajectory in both wins and attendance.

Tubby hasn’t finished year 2. I’d say a reasonable expectation is making the tournament next year. My guess is that he’ll be fired if he doesn’t.

So funny that you post stuff like this thinking that it is in any way factual. Another fact is that while Pastner was gaining all of that experience in different roles, he witnessed first hand how a D1 program is run and he for sure put the work in.

Penny hasn't spend any significant time around any program, hasn't been mentored by any D1 coaches and for sure doesn't know exactly how much work is involved in running a D1 program.

On paper that seems reasonable, but you can estimate with 99% certainty that he is too far behind to make it next year. If you just look at the 3 year plan in a vacuum it seems fine, but if you look at where we are now, how much we would have to improve and best case scenarios for our recruiting class, making the tournament next year seems next to impossible.

As far as your Pastner example goes, in a vacuum what you say seems reasonable. The truth is that since D1 jobs are 90% coach driven, Pastner had no experience, we lost most of our good players and we had the threat of more sanctions hanging over us.

The dynamic wasn't exactly the same as it was with Florida, where Mike White was taking over from Billy Donovan.

He was a Graduate Assistant under Lute Olsen for 6 years....That's NOT an Assistant Coach....03-shhhh and he served as a video coordinator that tied into recruiting because of his fathers connections to AAU 05-nono

I will bet you $100 that IF Penny is blessed with this opportunity, he won't use grade school tactics such as that ^^^^^^

Make it $500....heck $1000

So funny that you post stuff like this thinking that it is in any way factual. Another fact is that while Pastner was gaining all of that experience in different roles, he witnessed first hand how a D1 program is run and he for sure put the work in.

Penny hasn't spend any significant time around any program, hasn't been mentored by any D1 coaches and for sure doesn't know exactly how much work is involved in running a D1 program.

Annnndddd, The results of that experience learning how to RUN a D-1 program....Resulted in Joshie running Memphis into the ground, and NOW Georgia Tech....You're hilarious. Have you seen GT headlines? You need me to post one for ya buddy?

Running us into the ground? 4 NCAA tournaments and posteason his first 5 seasons and an RPI of 89 his 6th season, top 10 average attendance for 6 seasons and overall 15,500 for his 7 seasons. He was let go 1 year too late.

Impossible not to laugh at someone who uses the "phraze" gold medal expertise and calls someone stupid. Btw, that all important gold medal expertise happened more than 20 years ago, and guess what?

Quote:Clyde Drexler
In 1992, he was selected to the U.S. Olympic basketball team, nicknamed "The Dream Team", which won the gold medal in Barcelona.

Clyde Drexler also had gold medal expertise, but not only that...he had DREAM TEAM expertise that catapulted him to a record of 19-39 as a D1 coach. Chris Mullen has a record of 36-56 as a D1 coach.

Your turn Forrest.

It's called Point Guard for a reason, Basketball fundamentally begins with the PG as he/she is the person/point of emphasis most connected with the Head coach....During Time outs; foul shots or ANY breaks in the action for that matter, you will notice the Point Guard going over information with the head coach....NOT the Shooting Guard and NOT the Small Forward. Was Clyde compared to "Magic" Johnson as a floor general? How about Chris Mullen? Too oblivious to realize or admit, for that matter, that Joshie is/was an unqualified JOKE! And Penny, based on his achievements;accolades and the position that Memphis Basketball is in right NOW. Has earned the right to become head coach and deserves based on his merit; achievements as well as commitments to the city and the University. 04-chairshot 03-nutkick 04-rock
