Trump backs effort to improve gun background checks
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-t...SKCN1G31K6
Quote:The White House said on Monday that President Donald Trump supports efforts to improve federal background checks for gun purchases, days after a shooting at a Florida school killed 17 people.
Trump spoke to Senator John Cornyn, a Republican, on Friday about a bi-partisan bill that he and Democratic Senator Chris Murphy introduced to improve federal compliance with criminal background checks, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.
“While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system,” Sanders said in a statement.
Cornyn and Murphy introduced the bill to improve federal background checks last November, days after a gunman killed more than two dozen people in a church in Texas.
The bill, called the Fix NICS Act, would ensure that states and federal agencies comply with existing law on reporting criminal history records to the national background check system.
Cornyn, of Texas, had complained when introducing the legislation that compliance by agencies was “lousy.”
Here's someone "doing something" that actually has a chance to make a serious difference.

It's a start. I'd like to believe in this tweet by Murphy, one of the two authors of the bill.
"Interesting morning. Two quick thoughts: 1/ Trump's support for the FixNICS Act, my bill with @JohnCornyn, is another sign the politics of gun violence are shifting rapidly. 2/ No one should pretend this bill alone is an adequate response to this epidemic."

TDS is strong with you.
Even the NRA supports this bill

Quote:“The NRA has long supported the inclusion of all legitimate records in the [NICS],” NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action Executive Director Chris Cox said in a statement.
While federal law prohibited the Texas shooter from possessing a firearm, he was able to pass a background check because the Air Force failed to transfer his conviction record to the FBI,” Cox continued. “We applaud [Cornyn’s] efforts to ensure that the records of prohibited individuals are entered into NICS, while providing a relief valve for those who are wrongly included in the system.”

This is why I personally refuse to budge an inch. When we budge, the alt-left sees it as a victory, and then they use it as momentum to press for more.

Understood, but as a matter of principle I cannot be against improving the flow of information to those who do the background checks while at the same time being in favor of background checks.
As a collector of firearms, I've filled out at least 200 background checks over the years. They always took minutes to fill out, and the okay was always given rapidly with a simple phone call. I never once felt that the process restricted my rights to own a weapon.
Some people don't need to be in possession of them, and while most anyone can get his hands on one even if he's got a long criminal record, I'm in favor of making it as difficult as possible for those who are dangerous.
After one of these events I'd much read that the guy was denied access to the weapon via a background check (especially after the police visited his home 39 times in the last 5 or 6 years) than to see he passed it easily. Get those who handle illegal weapons off the streets is a good start.

RE: Trump backs effort to improve gun background checks
What needs to happen is for whoever dropped the ball for the Air Force on the Texas shooter, and whoever dropped the ball for the FBI on this one, need to see their careers go up in smoke. Probably can't do much more than that to them, unfortunately, but that would shake things up.
