ESPN reported last night that Marcus Thornton will sign a 10-day contract today with the Cleveland Cavaliers today in time for tonight's game!

Just great for Marcus..finally the opportunity in the NBA after all his hard work to get there.

Marcus' dad on Facebook and the Cleveland Plain Dealer in its sports section confirmed this today.

Marcus on the same floor with LeBron James would be something to watch.

Imagine we'll find out quick if this was just a paper move or if he gets a real chance to see where his value fits with this team. $46,000+ for ten days, then on to bigger money or back to Canton.

Shame the Wizards game tonight is in Cleveland and not in his DMV backyard.

BigTribe, I'm sure, fondly recalls Andy Duncan, who spent 3 years with the Spurs back in the '40s.

While I am sad we don't get to see Marcus in the World Cup Qualifying game tomorrow, I am super thrilled for him to get a shot with the Cavaliers. Maybe he will get a chance to actually see some minutes. Either way, 10 day contracts are good money when compared to the G league. He definitely has had a great year this season.

Per ESPN: Thornton's 10-day salary of $46,080 will count as $83,129 toward the luxury tax, costing the Cavaliers an extra $353,000 in luxury taxes and bringing their total tax bill to $50.3 million.

From the story on the Cavaliers' website:

"The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard Marcus Thornton to a 10-day contract, Cavaliers General Manager Koby Altman announced on Thursday. Thornton will be assigned to the Canton Charge before Friday night’s Charge game against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in Canton."

So ... they've signed him for 10 days, but he's going back to Canton by tomorrow? I guess it's still a step forward ... maybe someone with understanding about how these transactions work can explain.

I am now befuddled.

I think this is more in line with Cleveland trying to keep his rights. I don't foresee him getting much of an opportunity. This it's a shame that he missed out on his Team USA opportunity due to just a business transaction .

Because of trade deadlines, teams were required to have 14 players on their roster by a certain date. Marcus brought under 10 day contract to get their roster to 14 and meet that quota. In the interim, makes him no different than their two way contract players, London Perrantes and John Holland, who are listed officially on the Cavs roster, but currently playing for Canton. They had, also, sent a center on the roster down to Canton this week. He was not going to get inserted in their current tight game rotation, so, the bench end players in that 14 man roster are pushed to the G League affiliate to keep them active and hoping for development/trade leverage. At least Marcus gets more pocket change, and some added PR, but whether he eventually gets any real benefit remains to be seen. Ironic that Damion Lee replaced him on the USA team.
