MBB: A season of close losses
Losses by point spread:
10+: 4
5-9: 5
4: 1
3: 2
2: 3
1: 2
OT loss: 3
A 1 point swing in regulation could have this team at 12-16
A 2 point swing in regulation could have this team at 14-14
A 3 point swing in regulation could have this team at 17-12
A 4 point swing in regulation could have this team at 19-10 (11-4 in CAA)
A 5 point swing in regulation could have this team at 20-9
With a couple more made shots or a little better defense, JMU could be #3 in the CAA, right alongside NE. NE is the only team that has had our number both games this season (we'll see about Hofstra tonight). We could be fighting for 20 wins...not 10. I still think we're on the verge of being able to make some noise if we could just learn to close out games consistently. It's just unreal how many losses there have been that were decided by one shot...I didn't even want to look at how many of these games had JMU up in the last minute(s).
UPDATED: now includes 2-pt loss to UD - the hits just keep coming

and a lot of points were added when we had to foul to try to catch up; We are a good team and now we just need to prove to the rest of the CAA we are the best.

Unless I'm looking at scores incorrectly, I only found 4 games where we lost by double digits- ODU, UTSA and NE twice.
It really is incredible how close so many of these games have been. Looking at the margin of losses gives me hope we may not be that far off. It does concern me that we haven't blown anyone out either (Bridgewater doesn't count).
As far as this season is concerned, I'd rather face any CAA opponent but NE right now. We CAN beat anyone, but need to do a better job of putting other teams away. HCLR needs to do better settling the guys down when things start falling apart.

i don't think it's the number in the point spread.
it's the manner of how we've lost.
buzzer beaters (Radford, Richmond, Citadel, Hofstra), horrendous once in a lifetime ref calls (GMU)
those are the kind of breaks that usually even out. it's been very lopsided against us this year.

Yep. And, just think, you didn't even reference the late game collapse of all collapses...at W&M when we were up by 9 with 55 seconds left and by 8 with 42 seconds left (this after being up by 16-18 points for much of the game and had a 13 pt lead just under 4 minutes left). Hopefully, some of these breaks even-ing things out will shine on our side when the most important "season" takes place (March 3-6 in North Charleston).
I am hopeful we see the Tribe again in the CAAT (preferably us being the 5-seed playing them as 4-seed). We owe them.

RE: MBB: A season of close losses
The point remains strong that with exception of a few games this season, our guys have been within striking distance in the rest of 'em with a couple of minutes left in the game.
There's the Northern Ky game that finished with a final margin of losing by 9, but we were never really in that game at all. We were down by 17 at the half, by 23 with 10' left, and 18 with a little over 6' left before NKy took their foot off the gas.
On the flip side, we lost another game by 9 (at Florida) that was much closer than that for a lot of the game. For instance, down by 1 at the half and by 5 with 7:30 left. I actually think the guys got off the floor in Gainesville...still stumbling, but showed some things there - albeit small glimpses here and there - that made you think these guys could be decent if they ever get their act together.

All the games they've won have been very close too essentially, save the Bridgewater game. They're not there yet as a team, obviously.

i don't recall any fade away, 30 foot bank shot threes to win any of our games.
or any 8 point plays in .5 seconds either.
the luck and breaks have certainly been heavily against us this year.

The infamous 6 points at the O0:07 mark erasing our 2 possession 4 point lead. It's the only 6 point play I have or will ever see.

That's definitely a part of history I'm glad we weren't a part of.

It wasn't a 6 point play, but a few years ago I saw Duke down about 3 when they had a chance at a 4 point play, missed the free throw, got the offensive rebound, and made another 3.

it seemed like one play when a team scores 6 points in 1 second elapsing on the clock:

That would be 7 points, not 6. It was even worse than you remembered.
