My idea: Big Ten-Big East basketball; Big Ten-Hockey East hockey doubleheader at MSG
Instead of having a challenge with the Big East teams have one weekend of games at Madison Square Garden, which you would pair with a similar slate of games with Hockey East teams in a doubleheader on a Saturday and Sunday. I don't know how the TV contracts would allow it but I think it's better than having to have a tournament a week before the Big East's at MSG.

The Big Ten would no longer have a tournament at MSG since the two doubleheaders would give them the exposure necessary in New York City. I think that would appease the traditional basketball fans who are unhappy about having tournament games played in the East. Maybe have one every four years in D.C. to give Maryland fans the chance to attend.

Pluses:

- You would still get to play at MSG and still organize your regular tournaments with no squeezed in dates

- Greater exposure for college hockey teams by playing Hockey East teams in New York City and since it's not too far for Hockey East teams they won't need to spend a lot on travel

Potential minuses:

- I propose this to replace the regular Big East-Big Ten challenge but I think the doubleheaders should be played in January to maximize exposure. Would that be a problem with the 20-game schedule?

Imagine this type of doubleheader:

Saturday: Michigan State-Villanova followed by a Michigan State-Providence hockey game

Sunday: Indiana-St. John's followed by a Penn State-Boston College hockey game

How long does it take to transform MSG (or any athletic venue) from basketball to hockey or vice versa?

If the B1G wanted a serious New York presence they shouldn't have taken Rutgers. That brought cable boxes only.

Agreed. Syracuse would’ve been that answer. Actually, Penn St has a large NYC alumni presence.

It's funny you should say that because UConn fans claim to carry just as much of New York, if not more than Rutgers. If Rutgers was added only for cable boxes and UConn would have provided more cable boxes than Rutgers, then surely UConn would have been added, right?

RE: My idea: Big Ten-Big East basketball; Big Ten-Hockey East hockey doubleheader at MSG
We actually did have a Big Ten doubleheader in MSG earlier this year with Ohio State/Minnesota basketball followed by a hockey game later in the day. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure of the point in something that limited.

I agree if you are going to do something there, it has to be a bit bigger. I think having the Big Ten/Big East basketball challenge there would definitely be something that would move the needle more. It would also work if you incorporated some of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge instead or simply have a day or two of conference games there (maybe the December ones that sound like they'll stick going forward for 6 or so teams). That said, with 20 conference games, the schools are probably going to be somewhat reluctant to keep giving up control of games.

Regardless, I think the conference is giving up on the arena for the tournament. It will still come out east around 20% of the time, but not a week early.

State population of New Jersey = about 9 million

State population of Connecticut = about 3.5 million

It's simple math, Rutgers brought more cable boxes (and better high school recruiting grounds), and that's why they got the add. I never said I didn't get why the conference did what it did, but putting people in seats at MSG is something Rutgers doesn't really help you with.

Rutgers has more potential fans, a better recruiting area, better football, a better history of football, a higher floor and ceiling, better academics, and is contiguous. UConn provides better basketball which accounts for 20% of the television value as opposed to 80% for football. If the Big Ten wanted better exposure in New York, Rutgers, not UConn, is the correct choice.

Apparently not, as they had trouble selling tickets to a conference tournament in Rutgers backyard.

You are looking through a basketball-only lense. Football is four times more valuable than basketball.

......and Rutgers football is going to spend eternity getting waxed in the B1G East. Like I said, there are good reasons Rutgers was added, but this discussion is specifically about generating buzz in NYC, and more specifically about filling seats for a basketball tournament. Those are not the reasons you add Rutgers.

I really don't think attendance was a problem. The crowds I seen for 11 Midwestern teams and 3 Eastern teams in New York looked pretty remarkable.

My take on this is everybody thought this whole experiment with the BIG and NYC would be a huge fail! As it turns out, the whole thing was very successful and for whatever reason it has pissed some people off.

BIG doesn't want to have total control of NYC, it's plenty big enough for everybody. They just want a presence there and some exposure is all. I think it was successful and now its time for the Big East to take over Madison Square Garden.

RE: My idea: Big Ten-Big East basketball; Big Ten-Hockey East hockey doubleheader at MSG
As a pure sports addition, I actually do agree UConn made more sense. They would have provided a name brand basketball program, stronger in-state support, and still given a lot New York push. I wouldn't be surprised if today the conference was getting more money with UConn in than with Rutgers.

With that said, I think Rutgers was still the right choice if the choice was between them for a few other reasons.

1. We aren't just talking individual schools, but a group of schools. The conference now has a corridor between Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. The fans of the various schools are closer together which diminishes any feelings of being far away from everyone else and helps build rivalries.

2. Going along with #1, as Maryland and Rutgers were the newbies at the time, there opinions counted less (as they would only be invited if it made sense for everyone else), but Penn State's mattered a lot. Discontentment had build up over years of being in a Midwestern conference and there was long term (even if no short term) risk of them leaving. This move pretty much put all of that to bed. Penn State fans on both sides of the state now have rival schools relatively nearby.

3. Football recruiting may not have been the #1 priority here, but it was a priority. New Jersey is a growing state in that sense and adds a lot more.

4. Academics. I think having athletics and academics to tied is kind of silly and won't fully defend how this is used, but there is no doubt that academics are a big factor here and the conference wanted AAU members. I think from a schools president standpoint, this was huge.
