Charlotte is a major hub for United. Atlanta is a major hub for Delta. I believe Atlanta overtook Chicago as the nations busiest airport??

How often do the members actually go to the conference HQ? Every time I hear of an ACC meeting they are in some resort town.

Basing the HQ location on geography is crazy. Geography will change. Several AAC schools are prime candidates for P5 expansion. The HQ could wind up outside of the conference footprint.

They did a survey to see where the most current staff desired to move as well as where a large talent pool was to replace those that did not move

Is there really a thread going on about where a conference is being headquartered? I'd say it's a slow time in sports but March Madness is about to start.

The AAC's identity is "the best football schools east of continental divide that aren't in the P5". That's basically no identity at all, so as long as the HQ is east of the Rockies, it's fine.

Dallas makes more sense that Providence (which is not a major hub nor the home of any AAC school). AAC member SMU is located in Dallas and it is a major travel hub. There also might be some synergies to being in the same city as the HQ's of the Big12 and CUSA. Its also worth mentioning that 3 G5 bowls (2 with P5 opponents) are located in the Dallas Metroplex--and the area is host to many major college events due to Jerry World.

Overall, its not a bad place to put the HQ of an aspirational conference.

IMO, Dallas is about as far-flung as Providence. Providence is obviously way out of the way, and exists only as the vestige of the old Big East.

But Dallas, too, is WAY to the west of the conference's footprint. As someone else pointed out, the actual geo-center is between Birmingham and Atlanta. The problem with that is there isn't an actual AAC team within hundreds of miles, and putting an HQ in the heart of SEC territory is suicide in terms of getting any publicity.

Orlando, too, is way out of the way, far to the south of most of the conference.

Probably the best we can do in terms of a combination of geography and a media hub would be someplace like Memphis.

I wonder if the Miami Beach Bowl had been originally placed in Frisco (and the AAC HQ was there as well) if it would have been successful. The AAC brass would have certainly been able to do a better job of the day to day management of building the volunteer network needed to create a successful bowl. Thats the sort of tedious--- but necessary---work required for these bowl games to be successful.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been the WORLD'S busiest airport (by total annual passengers) every year since 1998. However, Chicago O'Hare International Airport was the world's busiest by aircraft movements in 2014, every other year has also been claimed by Atlanta.

DFW airport.

The odd one is the SEC staying in Birmingham.

Ahhhh I forgot that Dallas is the only city in America with a major airport

Providence sure doesn't have one. Between the coastal states, its Dallas, Denver and Chicago. Las Vegas has pretty good domestic connections.

I never said it did. Though it is only about an hour from Boston Logan which is a major airport. #17 in the U.S. by total annual passengers. Of course Providence made a lot more sense before the Big East football conference decided its best course of action after the split with the basketball powers was to turn itself into another Southern/Western league and rename itself "The American".

Charlotte would be a good choice. It is an ACCish location, but ECU is in the conference. Charlotte is also home to regional ESPN production facilities/broadcasts. Charlotte is big with banking headquarters.

Other things that matter: rent, available buildings/space, overhead, personnel needs/preferences, (employees moving), weather, taxes, and incentives offered.

Atlanta, Dallas, NYC, etc., have their good points as well.

My vote would be for a move to Memphis, but as stated earlier AAC (unlike its Big East predecessor) has no true geographic base so it doesn't really matter.

Well Wichita pulled it a bit west of I59 between Birmingham and Chattanooga. Before Wichita the center was on I75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga.

Huntsville is the center now. Atlanta and Dallas are better places to live than Memphis, and the Networks are more likely to drop in there. Heck CNN is in Atlanta. So I'd opt for one of those, probably Atlanta.

There is an advantage to having your headquarters near the headquarters of other conferences.

Makes it real easy for two commissioners to sit down face to face to discuss issues, including but not limited to proposals pending with the NCAA and CFP.

Never thought of if that way. Reason more for AAC HQ in Dallas.

When I did it I included Navy, but it was before Wichita State. The result was about 30 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, right off I75 heading to Chattanooga. If the new calculation did not include Navy then the only real effect would be to pull the center a little further east, closer to Chattanooga than Huntsville, and back inside the Triangle I came up with.

Atlanta is the nearest big city. And it makes sense. It's an easy short commuter hop from Philly (Temple), Baltimore (Navy), Cincy, Memphis, Orlando (UCF), Tampa (USF), NOLA (Tulane), and not bad for Tulsa, Houston, or Dallas (SMU). UConn is the only one that it's bother for.

Oh, and the SEC is based there, a good second conference to talk to, just as Dallas has the B12. (both fine IMO)

The closest Division I conference HQ to Atlanta is the ASun based in Macon. Could hang out with the SIAC commissioner, they are based in Atlanta.

SEC is based in Birmingham. Sun Belt was about to sign a lease to take their old space in Hoover, AL until Katrina then the consensus was it wasn't a good look for the Sun Belt to move out of New Orleans a few months after the storm.

They ended up moving across New Orleans to the Superdome renting space from the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, the operator of the New Orleans Bowl.

So they couldn't do that over the phone? Or e-mail?

I get that there's something about face-to-face interaction but you don't need to be next door to each other to operate regularly. If you ever need a private meeting with no recordings or something, these guys are rich and beyond that likely have some kind of account from the conference to fly anywhere they want.

We agree.

So I say it should be Memphis, Tennessee. See map below.

Yes, the AAC geography is basically one giant ring around the deep south. Memphis is as close to the "middle" of it as we can get. Best choice. 04-cheers

Sure you can tap into the expense account and fly to where ever if need be but not the same as being able to meet over coffee on an hour's notice. Sun Belt would be well served moving to Birmingham for example because the league contracts the SEC to provide football and men's basketball officials.
