Thad Cochran.
Thad Cochran ® Senator from Mississippi has decided to step down effective April 1, 2018 due to health problems. One can only hope that McCain will follow his lead.

RE: Thad Cochran.
So, there WILL be a chance for the Dems to face off against Chris McDaniel. This works as well for the Dems as possible in Mississippi.

at least TC had enough sense to not mandate his building take over one of the best tailgate spots in all of college sports.....

Thad was a pretty good one....he'll be missed....

Lott I don't I miss for one freakin' minute....and every day I pass by his mausoleum I simply spit at it out of spite....

the other old school MS senator is waving goodbye....at least one did it with dignity, humility, and respect.....

McCain resigning would not be optimal for the Republicans. You don't want two GOP seats in Arizona to defend this cycle. You really don't. We'd love to have another opportunity for a swingish open seat in this electoral environment.

Kelli Ward or Joe Arpaio could win the GOP primary in either of them, virtually guaranteeing a Dem takeover. Heck, McSally is going to have trouble against Sinema.

Furthermore, it causes Gov. Ducey problems too. He's going to have to appoint someone, and if he goes hard right, he's going to have trouble in his reelection campaign. And if he goes moderate that causes him trouble as well in a primary.

---

I promise you...defending 1 seat in Arizona is a lot better than defending 2 in Arizona.

Yea yea yea, sure...BTW, have you seen how likely GOP nominee Chris McDaniel treated Cochran in 2014.

I didn't disparage Cochran. I certainly didn't send my campaign manager over to his wife's nursing home in some bizarre attempt to embarrass him.

Cochran's health problems aren't a secret.

But I will note that the OP did pretty much directly cheerlead McCain potentially stepping down.

---

This has political ramifications. Basically, the GOP has decided that they want to protect Wicker at the risk of McDaniel blowing Cochran's Senate Seat. BTW, upon looking at the rules in Mississippi in special elections, this looks like an attempt to freeze McDaniel out. You see, in the Mississippi special, its a jungle primary' where the top two finishers (all of whom run non-partisan), advance to a runoff in December if no one gets 50%. Basically, Bryant is betting that his appointee will edge out McDaniel and will be able to win in a low turnout runoff in December (where in theory the Dems would be at a disadvantage - of course that didnt' work out that way in Alabama).

First of all, if McDaniel's the nominee, you'll find a huge African American turnout and very little of it is likely to be Republican. Any evidence that African Americans support national Republicans in any county by a majority?

Its entirely possible that McDaniel's pro-Confederacy tactics will engender somewhat higher than normal Anglo turnout.

My argument is that this gives the GOP another opportunity to blow it. And the pieces are there for them to do so.

I vote almost totally Libertarian but in close races I tend to root for the republicans. Not because I like them, but because I hate the democrats more. At best I see republicans as the lesser evil, and lesser evils are still evil. So I won't enable them.

But we are getting to the point where the failure of republicans to come up with any coherent platform or set of principles is becoming very annoying. Bernie wants to make us Venezuela and I reject that. WTF do republicans offer as an alternative?

Meh, someone has to be the chair. Shelby isn't much of a fan of Donald Trump. Heck he even publically refused to back the GOP Senate nominee in his own state. He's also in his 80's and might be out of f__ks to give if he need to do the right thing versus play Trumps game.

Yeah, and I'm 100% in favor of that. But they can't just say not socialism. Because here's what happens. If it's just socialism versus not socialism, then we are inevitably going to end up somewhere in between, which just means we get to become Venezuela slower rather than faster. I'm ready for republicans to grow a pair and get back on the field with some ideas instead of just not socialism.

Historially Governors appointing themselves don't perform well electorally.

Bryant is a piece of work. That's to be sure.

----

There isn't going to be a special election in any real sense here. These are the Mississippi rules for special elections for the US Senate

1) The Governor will appoint someone to fill the seat until an election is held in November for the remainder of the Senate term
2) A jungle primary (no partisan nominees - everyone runs) will be held on the November election day
3) If no candidate gets 50%, the top 2 advance to a December run off.

My guess is that Bryant and Cochran have this planned out. My guess is that Bryant already has a plan to screw McDaniel. Or Wicker is so scared of McDaniel that he's trying to give McDaniel Cochran's seat to save him in a primary.

That would be interesting. So he'd temporarily give up the Governor's mansion and take a leave of absence to take up a Senate seat? That doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially if Bryant wasn't planning on running himself.

McConnell plus intervention in Southern Senate special elections. What could go wrong?

RE: Thad Cochran.
Basically, the liberal sites are saying that

1) Bryant will not appoint himself
2) This is definitely an attempt by McConnell and Bryant to hurt McDaniel's chances (although I don't see how this really hurts him)
3) Basically Wicker doesn't want to run against McDaniel. And this would clear out the stronger Dem competition by shifting them to the open seat
4) The GOP thinks they'll have a better shot in a December runoff against a Democrat than in the November special.

This could backfire, especially if Presley jumps into the open seat race. My guess is that the GOP would try to fund a Dem stalking horse in that race to try and freeze him out of the runoff. I suppose they're going to figure out a way to keep multiple Republicans from filing too, although I would think that an open Senate seat in Mississippi (where no state legislators and/or elected officials have to give up a seat to run) would be very enticing to many Republicans. Heck if I'm the Dems, I might try to get two Dems running (Pressley and an African American Democrat) and hope for a GOP race with a bazillion candidates, and hope that somehow the two Dems finish 1-2. If it doesn't look like that might happen, have one of them agree to drop out in August or Septemeber.
