Many of them have to run in the middle or lean right but then go lefty when elected.

Problem is that republicans do the same thing. Or perhaps more correctly, they don't come up with any ideas except on abortion and gay rights, they just try to keep the status quo. So we move left, slowly but surely.

I want to see a republican say we're going to balance the budget, have lower and flatter and broader tax rates (including a consumption tax), replace Obamacare with universal private care/insurance, and have a subsistence level universal basic income to replace our current focused and means tested welfare hodge-podge.

Domestic policy: People who work should live better than people who don't work.
Foreign policy: Treat our friends better than we treat our enemies.
Military policy: Never fight a war that we don't intend to win.

Develop a platform around those principles and stick to them.

I would say we have been moving right the last thirty years to our detriment. Trade? to the right.....

Unions.... decimated

Education? definitely right hell in a hand basket right.

LBQGT is the only area we have moved left

How so?

Mainly because their excessive demands made their employers non-competitive in global markets.

Quote:Education? definitely right hell in a hand basket right.

How so? What I see is more social engineering experiments plus more movement toward trendy leftist ideas that don't work.

Quote:LBQGT is the only area we have moved left

We have, and I applaud most of that. Not all, but most.

We have been generally moving to the right to our benefit since the disastrous Carter years.

We've moved left in social issues.

In both cases, the rightward and leftward movement has had a libertarian undertone.

Its kind of laughable that the right thinks that the 'left' has taken over education when literally thousands of educational jobs are not open to non-Christians and LGBT persons

Number of jobs in education not open to evangelical conservatives....As far as I know.. 0.

Education has moved to the right? hahahaha.

Try being an "out" Conservative on a College Campus these days. I can tell you from my kids and their friends experience, it isn't pleasant. Several of the young men they/we have known simply quit cause they knew they weren't going to get a fair shot, and from some pretty damn good schools, too. I'm also convinced that's why male applications are trending down, comparatively.

Forget the kookier places like Emory or Bezerkely, other than a (very) select few, you can't swing a dead cat by the tail on 90% of campuses without hitting an entire coffee lounge worth of devoted socialist professors. Most gave up even pretending any sense of objectivity a generation or more ago.

K-12? In one of Bush 43's more unfortunate lapses of judgment, he essentially let Ol Drunk Teddy write the damn thing to show he was "reaching across the aisle", and we all know what a devoted right winger he was.

Give me a break.

Education moving right. 03-lmfao

There are far more resources going to public education today than ever before, even after adjusting for inflation. The problem is not that public education is not getting enough resources. The problem is that too much money is being wasted on stupid social engineering and non-productive stuff. Put the money back into the classroom, focus on the three R’s, put children on tracks according to their interests and abilities, and for heaven’s sake find ways to make everybody accountable.

My Mom who taught 31 years is echoing your exact sentiment and has been forever. Teachers know how to teach. Give them the resources...back them up...and then hold them accountable. Not really complicated is it?

So what the "INFLATION ADJUSTED" per pupil spending should continue to incresae at what rate mach? In 1980 (30 years ago) we spent $3,000 per student. Today we spend $6,000 per student.

So we spend twice as much now then.

The public education system doubled it's per pupil spending and did a **** job between 1980 and 2000. So people look for other options, families and groups get together to form public charter schools.

These schools do as good or better than many of the public schools, without being owned wholesale by the unions and politicians.

And yet through it all, you're still getting *the same amount* per student.

IOW charter schools have, at most, damaged your ability to keep milking the tax payers for more and more money every time a contract comes up.

In inflation-adjusted dollars, it has doubled since 1983-84 and tripled since 1969-70. Has the quality of education improved? By all metrics that I've seen, no, it's gotten worse. The problem is that we added on all this social engineering and administrative overhead. Forget it, put the money back in the classroom, get back to basics, put students on tracks, and hold everybody accountable. How many assistant principals did you have in HS? How many now? WTF?

Yup!

My mom taught 42 yrs.

Forty two freaking years, you whiners.

And bought/paid for enough schit out of her own checks that I am still clearing out an entire storage unit of accordions, bongo drums, guitars, banjos, harpsichords, hand bells, xylophones and much more, from a dedicated teacher of her craft. She was proficient in an amazing number of instruments.

Taught probably tens of thousands of kids over those years, even saw third generations come through the doors toward the end.

Yet we now hear whining from 20 yr “vets”, who share hallways with blue hair ladies in tennis shoes.

It’s amazing.

Simple, half of the spending goes to the the army of middle aged overweight women that sit in a district office, complete checklists, and push paper. The other half of the spending goes to an army of middle aged overweight bureaucrat women sitting in a DC area office receiving checklists and paperwork. None of it goes to the teachers or the classroom. The saddest part is that the teachers unions have not only allowed this to happen, but have managed to keep their members fully onboard with the scam.

Simple, because those members who are teaching aspire to be one of those (well paid) paper pushers. Get rid of those paper pushers on both sides, put the savings into the classroom, including higher pay for teachers, adequate funding for supplies, and while we are at it beefed up security.

that's a loaded question.......one could answer defining the degradation of family, LBJ's great society, #unions, wealth divide creating social instability and a 2 person labor requirement, etc......

I don't disagree with your posits in this thread, but it's an unfair question to define in a simple answer....

I liken this to ZEROcare.........once you create the subsidized monster, outside of 'time', it becomes extremely difficult to eradicate moving forward....

once you spoil 'em, it's tough to whip 'em back into shape....
