RE: Would you take ESPN+ in the next media deal...?
I'd be ok with having "some" content on ESPN-Plus. As long as we say an INCREASE in current content on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU. In other words, if you took out current ESPN-3 content and moved it to ESPN-Plus----thats fine....assuming a nice raise comes with it.

That's essentially what I'm asking right here.

ESPN+ is just ESPN's way of making the AAC feel like it's getting something, when in reality, it's not (see all the games they sold to CBSSN despite telling Aresco how much exposure we'd have, which was supposed to be the tradeoff for the peanuts tv deal they gave us).

again, HARD PASS on ESPN+....let them experiment with it with some other conference (A10, MoValley, etc).

I think we can forget about ESPN for anything but third in line packages. Aresco know exactly how much ESPN made off of our games selling them. We will skip the middle man and sell them ourselves. It is much more likely that with the schools continued growth in digital capability and Arescos talking points that our digital left overs will be going to Amazon, Google, Facebook types.

First and second choice will be going to an OTA network and their sports network. ESPN will pick up anything of value left over. ESPN will have less and less influence over what will be happening. They did range the market floor for us. Cbssn will pay at least what they have been paying ESPN for similar content. That's the floor, I expect it will only significantly increase as we continue to show great value.

I think its very likely ESPN will be a significant portion of our next deal. I also think its equally unlikely they are going to be our exclusive rights holder in our next deal.

RE: Would you take ESPN+ in the next media deal...?
i was going to make a thread about this, but changed my mind. but i think we already turned down a deal from espn plus

here is my theory with no evidence..(grab your tin foils everyone)

part 1: the sunbelt
1) our deal and their deal was supposed to finish at the same..why is theirs already fully redone, but not ours...and the timing

part 2: espn+ launch
1) sunbelts deal was done right before the lunch of espn+
2) the new deal edits the last 2 years of the current deal to put content on espn+

it must be concluded their deal was done to bolster espn+

part 3: the sunbelt really?
1) if espn is really bolstering content for espn+ the sunbelt isnt really bolstering anything. noting they have a dramatically stronger conference in the exact same negotiation period, who would have actually boosted it. it makes no sense.

the conclusion . they must have approached us aswell.

part 4: commish
1) recent interviews doesn't appear that we are actively negotiating now.

potential conclusion: we had no interest in being the college centerpiece of espn+

So is ESPN3 going subscription only now? or is ESPN+ something completely different?

Part 1: Cause they had to add a championship game into their contract, we didn’t.

I'm not sure if you have to pay extra for it or not, but that content will include MLB and NHL too, so that's a good value if you can get all that for $5.

I know .. it's an add-on .. I'm saying that if we were the prime content for them to kick off their full streaming package .. then I'd be all for it .... as long as it doesn't pull the content off of the main channels.

That is what they will do...they will continue to give most of their prime spots to the P5 and conferences like the AAC will be on the ESPN+

They do this now...instead of ESPN+, they sell a lot of our stuff to CBSSN. We had some darn good match ups on CBSSN this year that should have been on ESPN or ESPN2. Espn+ will just take the place of CBSSN. The only people that will pay to watch the AAC on ESPN+ are AAC fans...which destroys our 'exposure'.

hard pass...

What if all else remains the same? The same amount of required games OTA, and move all CBS Sports games / ESPN3 games to ESPN+?

I'd do it just to not have to deal with those horrendously lengthy CBS commercials and production value.

CBSSN game telecasts KILLED ESPN3...half of the ESPON3 games were broadcast from the studio with the color guy on his cell phone driving his car to a P5 game.

At leasat CBSSN had the announcers AT the game and I thought they had really solid production.

You mean power football games like these bellow;

Indiana vs Rutgers
Maryland vs Indiana
Kentucky vs Vanderbilt
Wake Forest vs Duke
Boston vs Pittsburg

... If so here's what I think about that ^^^ hahaha

Why would we want ESPN plus. It is the equivalent of paying for a shoddy espn 3 production. In our initial contract we left money on the table in exchange for exposure. This undoes any good from the first contract. No one is going to search for a main event AAC game on the internet.

I would rather have the games on the espn cable channels or cbs sports, but if the only way to watch certain games is on espn+ I would pay the five bucks, so I answered yes for that reason.

lol...I didnt post it--but I had kinda reached a similar conclusion. That said, I think there are several factors working against an early renewal.

1) We prabably arent interested in having anything other than current ESPN-3 content on ESPN-Plus

2) UConn, Cinci, and USF are about to take a major revenue hit when the realignment fund is exhausted (probably next year). Those schools will want to squeeze every dollar out of this next deal---so the deal would have to be really high for them to sign on.

3) Kinda relates to point #2---conventional wisdom says you maximize the next deal by competitive bidding and by splitting the AAC rights into multiple packages appealing to multiple networks. That cant be done until the exclusive negotiating period is over.

4) The biggest advantage to an early renewal is that it can modify the remaining years on the current deal. In other words---its the only way to get extra money before the current contract expires. My feeling on this was--the time to do that was summer 2017. At that point, we were still over 2 years from even testing the open market waters and we would get 3 years of increased money on our current deal. Today, we are just 10 months away from being able to actually test the open market and a renewal would only increase 2 full payout years. When combined with the fact that forgoing the open market likely also forgoes maximizing your next deal---an early renewal is essentially becoming less attractive with every passing month.

Nope---I think we are heading to the open market unless ESPN submits a really nice offer. I think that offer probably has to be 6 million or more a team to even have a chance being accepted. It has to be high enough that enough that AAC presidents have a real fear that it might not get matched in the open market. A 3 million per team low ball offer will have no chance.

I mean the answer to this is sure for enough money I would be fine with the AAC doing this. The “enough” amount though is far more than they’d ever offer.

Voted no - if I can't get a game on the channels above on my paid cable subscription or on my computer for free, plus the other major channels, plus the B-10 channel, and FS1, the ACC channel, and CBSSN, I don't watch the game. As a case in point I don't get the SEC channel so I can't watch South Carolina when it is on there only, but I usually can watch Temple and other AAC games, Rutgers, and South Carolina when they are on the channels mentioned above if I'm not actually at a game myself at Rutgers, UConn, Temple, Army, Navy, or on my annual trip to South Carolina. 07-coffee3

This was something Ive been kinda looking to see. Would a major pro league ever give exclusive rights to some games to a streaming network? Well, it looks like it has happened. Facebook bought the EXCLUSIVE US rights to 25 MLB games. That domino falling might mean that a streaming network could actually be a SIGNIFICANT player in our next deal. Frankly, I discounted any real possibility we might sell anything significant to a streamer---now, I think that very well could happen.

From the way Aresco has talked and the number of schools upgrading their capabilities this is where I expect our third level rights to end up. Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, etc. More and more little tid bits point to Aresco cutting out most of espn's influence. He's being way smarter though than the mwc try was. I think with chord cutting now may be the perfect time. More importantly you see other major conferences positioning themselves similarly. The Big 10 and PAC going to fox OTA, sec OTA on CBS, Big 12 on Fox as well. Really only the ACC seems completely tied to the ESPN family.

I voted yes because I figured that’s where they would park TU games. Otherwise I avoid paying for other streaming services. I’m hoping the CBS all access is a big failure. Once all TV content is on streaming services then they will nickel and dime us until we’re all paying more until we do now for cable or satellite.

Idk. I got the impression that was more about sports that arent typically widely televised (3rd tier stuff). I think thats definitely going to happen. I think we will see schools producing more womens basketball, volleyball, baseball, track, etc events for viewing on a platform like ESPN Plus, Amazon, or Netflix. I like ESPN-Plus for this purpose because there is an alignment and it may be a way to actually get a little money for this content. Its never going to be a big revenue stream--this is more about improving the quality of these programs via exposure and improved recruiting.
