Preparing for Cat 7 volcanic eruption
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-02784-7

"...The devastating Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 and the Tōhoku earthquake in Japan in 2011 highlighted some of the worst-case scenarios for natural disasters. But humanity has not had to deal with a cataclysmic volcanic disaster since at least 1815, when the eruption of Tambora in Indonesia killed tens of thousands of people and led to a ‘year without a summer’ in Europe and North America. Such world-altering blasts rank at 7 or more on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) scale of eruptions, which goes to 8....

But a VEI-7 eruption would be of an entirely different scale. In 1257, a VEI-7 eruption in what is now Indonesia probably cooled the planet down enough to kick off a centuries-long cold snap called the Little Ice Age, Robock says. “These things are hugely important for the planet, but the next one will take place in quite a different environment,” he adds...."

This is merely a big volcano they are discussing, not a supervolcano like Yellowstone.

This is exactly what we deserve, the way we've been acting. 03-lmfao

It's pretty amazing to think that

Quote:They include Taupo in New Zealand, site of the world’s last VEI-8 eruption — 26,500 years ago

was the proverbial blink of an eye, earth age wise. And the craziest part is that yes, it WILL happen, and when it does, it WILL happen anytime between tomorrow and the year 14,034 give a take a few thousand years.

The earthquakes in Chile, Japan, and New Zealand etc are all probably interconnected somehow, as is current volcanic activity in Indonesia. As well, things were pretty quiet along the Pacific Rim during the 20th century, and we may well be returning to an era of more earthquakes and volcanic activity. Or we may not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(I've been to Taupo, a long time ago. I also spent a weekend fishing the waters off Anak Krakatoa in Indonesia. Vistied Mt St Helens a few years ago. And just on Monday I saw Mt. Shasta in CA while flying on business. Apparently I am a volcano tourist)

So it's your fault?05-stirthepot

There honestly isn't much we can do to prepare. If it happens we are going to see a significant portion of the world population die. You can only store so much food for so long before it runs out.

And Yellowstone will erupt between a year and 2 or 300,000 years. It will be vastly more devastating than the 7s which have caused massive disruption in a less connected world.

Yellowstone is not a fun one to dwell on. A cataclysm like that is going to be monstrous no matter when it hits (and no matter how advanced we are if it ends up being far off). "This place wants us dead" monstrous. Not today though! 03-phew

Yes, Yellowstone is the end of human civilization. Its lava has previously gone as far as Texas. It would probably make all of North America unfit for multi-cellular life for a decade. Mass extinctions world wide. Last 3 were 630,000, 1.3 million and 2.1 million years ago.

These "mere" VEI 7s, though, could cause a lot of starvation and disruption.
