UTEP men's basketball has had a tough go of it lately, and they're trying to get in a position to get in a position to get in a position to recapture past glories at this point.

But hark! The Miner brand still carries weight! Because according to Thrillist, you have some of the worst fans in college basketball!

Because UTEP basketball isn’t known for much other than beating down racist-ass Adolph Rupp back when it was Texas Western, its fans don’t get their due for being some of the nastiest in all of college basketball. Going to a game at the Haskins Center, you might think to yourself "El Paso is no treasure but at least the game should be fun." Walking into the stadium, you realize everyone is screaming exceptionally loud for a weekday game against Rice. Then there’s a fight. Then a row of fans behind you doesn’t like a first half foul call and screams "You’re ******* gonna die, ref!" repeatedly, even during halftime. Then you realize all you can smell is a combination of whiskey, tequila, and more whiskey, and that you should probably get the hell out of there before someone mistakes you for that ref. As you leave, you make a mental note to warn anyone who hasn’t been through UTEP that their fans are the Raiders fans of college basketball.

I have always said UTEP has a passionate, but trashy fan base. It might come from the fact that they do have more T-shirt fans than most in CUSA.

ODU fans are the salty ones. This is the second thread created by an ODU fan bashing UTEP. I state my opinion on a separate thread and we have the ODU fan base attacking it and my university. I know your intentions were good. Quite frankly this is an honor if the list was true. Our fan base is a bunch of old folks who get mad if you stand up. Our student section is extinct and the few who do go can’t put their phone down for more than 10 seconds. While we love to be in the same category as those other blue blood programs we (UTEP fans) simply know it’s not true. We had a discussion about this on our board when the lists was first published. You can read the comments for yourself but none of us agree we belong on such a list. Maybe in the 80s when Don Haskins has us giant killing.

I firmly believe if we can get our b-ball program on par with yours the 2000 miles of mild distaste will turn into one of the nastiest rivalries in CUSA.

Fans should never throw anything at anyone but players should not antagonize fans in an emotional setting as the ODU players did.

Every fan base, yours included, is going to have a few get out of control in a situation like that.

I wasn’t present but I apologize in behalf of the UTEP fans who threw objects on the court towards the ODU players. Have a beer and lighten up a bit.

That's child's play. You east coast guys don't know "hate" and out of control football fans until you've played at Fresno St. Hawaii was real bad too. When LA Tech was in the WAC, FSU fans were so bad and unruly towards opposing football teams the WAC created a "Fresno Rule" that disallowed student sections to be located behind a visitors bench. The WAC literally made home teams in the WAC move to the "visitors" side of the stadium when hosting a WAC game. So, when Tech played a WAC game at home, the visiting team was literally on the home side. That was weird. Thank you, Karl Benson!!
