Need cable tv expertise
I need you guys' and gals' expertise on hooking up a tv to get the Tiger football and bb games. Currently, I have no tv cable at all, by choice, but I want to gear up to watch all the bb games, and I would also like to see some tv news, Netflix, and podcasts and other decent shows.

I have Comcast for my computers. What kind of tv should I buy? Smart TV, or what are the other options to consider? Son-in-law says a Roku stick can get the games, but I want to do everything legally. Can I have a tv in a room away from my modem and have it connected wirelessly?

Please explain this stuff so I can understand it. I'm quite tech savvy on most things, but not this.

Thanks!

RE: Need cable tv expertise
I just dropped my cable TV package and signed up for Direct TV Now. I don't know if they still have it, but they had a promo where you prepay for 4 months and get a free Apple TV. If they're not doing that deal any more, Rokus are great. I have 2 on other TVs. DirectTV Now has an app for all the popular devices. My package has the sports channels I wanted (ESPN channels, CBS Sports, Fox Sports) and you can authenticate with many of the apps if you also get the channels. For example, I'm watching a baseball game on the ESPN app right now on my iPad because I authenticateed with my DirecTV Now account.
There are other services out there like YouTube TV, Sling TV, Playstation Now (which doesn't require a Playstation console). Look at the channels and pricing, and choose what's best for you. What's great about all of them is that there's no contracts. If you don't like one, cancel it and try another.

If you currently have TV's with HDMI you can get any type of stick and get the necessary apps. If you have amazon prime I would go with a fire stick as the subscription comes with their original shows and movies.

So far it seems you've gotten excellent advice.

I sold Electronics for over 35 years & if I was in the market for a TV I'd look at 4K resolution LG & Sony TVs.

Cletus, how long do you think it will be before most stations actually broadcast in 4K? I've had a 42" Vizio I bought at Sam's 10 years ago. I've been secretly hoping it'll bust so I can go get a larger 4k tv. It'll be considerably bigger, better and much cheaper than what I paid 10 years ago for my first hi-def tv. When I'm in Sam's I just am amazed at the picture on the 4k's. I know they're using a special 4k disk for displays off somewhere but it's still amazing. The only real 4k I see advertised now is the occasional DirecTv message to catch the 4k game of the week and it'll be something like Georgia Tech and Rutgers or an EPL game. It just seems 4k is coming along very slowly.

Well the easy quick answer is when it becomes a Industry-Government Standard.

You can already get DirecTV in 4K. But that also depends upon how much original production is shot in 4K.

It can always be up-converted as well as down-converted resolution wise.

There are Hand-held as well as Studio HD to 4K switchable cameras available & they're getting less expensive every day.

The human eye can only see/determine just so much difference.

Of course a lot of research has already been done on 8K.

lol

Get a Samsung 65" 4K from Costco. They double the warranty. If you have fast internet, go with Sling TV. They have a $75 package that gives you almost everything you could want, including a cloud DVR, EXCEPT local stations. You can get them with a inexpensive over the air broadcast antenna. I have ROKU on all the tvs in the house.

In my case, all I need to keep the wife happy is Hallmark channels. Got em. I get ESPN family of channels, Fox sports and CBS sports. All I need to watch games.

My only complaint is no capability to DVR local channels. I plan to pick up a DVR box to do that. There is a ton of stuff to watch in 4K on Netflix, where we watch stuff about 90% of the time. Just don't watch network tv that much anymore.

I looked and at the moment, Sling is offering a free ROKU if you sign up and prepay 2 months or something like that. Might not be a 4K ROKU, but they don't cost very much. I think I payed about $80 for mine?

A lot of online content is in 4K, I know Netflix has a lot, particularly their originals. I have a lot of movies I purchased from iTunes that they automatically updated to 4K versions (though you need an AppleTV to play it). Also services like Vudu offer 4K content.

I'd suggest signing up for Movies Anywhere. This replaces the various services like UltraViolet and the iTunes digital copies you get when you buy a DVD or Blu Ray. Most studios are on board with this and you'll get to watch your movies almost anywhere, iTunes, Vudu, Amazon, Google, Microsoft. It's been pretty great so far.
