Quote:Snyder Called Up to Major Leagues by Arizona Diamondbacks
Houston Native Becomes the 18th Major Leaguer in School History

Aug. 19, 2004

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Former University of Houston catcher Chris Snyder was called up to the Major Leagues Wednesday and should join the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

Snyder's contract was purchased by the Diamondbacks from Double-A El Paso after regular catcher Koyie Hill was lost for the season with a fractured ankle.

This season, Snyder has emerged as an offensive power with a .301 batting average, 31 doubles, 15 home runs and 57 RBIs.

"Right now, we need a guy behind the plate who's solid receiving, blocking, and throwing runners out," Arizona manager Al Pedrique said in an interview with Steve Gilbert on MLB.com. "We need to find out what Snyder can do."

A three-year letterwinner at UH, Snyder joined the Cougars in 2000 after a stellar prep career at Spring Woods High. In 2001, he was selected as a member of Team USA after becoming only the eighth player in UH history to win the team's Triple Crown with a .316 batting average, 13 home runs and 53 RBIs.

Snyder enjoyed the best season of his collegiate career in 2002 as he led the Cougars with a .343 batting average and school-record 71 RBIs to go with 15 home runs. He joined former slugger Brett Cooley as the greatest single-season home-run hitting duo in school history.

By the time that the season ended, Snyder was a Second-Team All-American.

He became the 18th player in school history to reach the Major Leagues and the second in less than 20 days. Former shortstop/relief pitcher Jesse Crain joined the Minnesota Twins on Aug. 1.

Snyder's arrival also makes him the third Cougar off the 2002 UH team to reach the Major Leagues with Crain and Ryan Wagner (Cincinnati Reds) on active MLB rosters.

That team tied a school record with 48 wins and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional at Austin championship game before falling to eventual national champion Texas.

Other Cougars who are currently on a Major League 40-man roster are Shane Nance (Arizona Diamondbacks), Woody Williams (St. Louis Cardinals) and Ben Weber (Anaheim Angels).
