DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team got off to a strong start Saturday evening with a 3-1 victory over visiting Oklahoma State in exhibition play at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. Both teams had won their respective conference tournaments in 2003 (SMU - WAC; Oklahoma State - Big 12).

After a sluggish 13 minutes of play in the first half, SMU kicked it into gear as sophomore forward Olivia O'Rear punched in a shot into the upper left corner of the net at the 14:06 mark. O'Rear collected her second goal at the 21:21 mark as a Mustang defensive steal in Cowgirl territory gave freshman Krystal Bailey the ball to feed to O'Rear at point blank range. The Cowgirls notched their lone goal early in the second half (41:35) as Jolene Schweitzer kicked in a loose ball in front of the SMU goal. The Mustangs tallied an insurance goal by senior midfielder Jill Heinemann at the 56:29 mark.

SMU enters the 2004 season as the favorite to capture its fourth WAC crown and is ranked 21st in the Soccer Buzz.com preseason poll. The Mustangs kick-off their season with two road games, beginning Friday, Aug. 27 at TCU. Gametime is set for 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, Aug. 29, SMU travels to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast over the Internet through Big Soccer Radio.
