A-rod played 3 seasons in Texas and they went like this:
2001: 7.8 fWAR (5th in MLB)
2002: 10 fWAr (2nd in MLB)
2003: 9.2 fwar (3rd in MLB)
And in those 3 seasons he missed only one game! Yeah what a horrible deal for Texas.
Right. A-Rod in Texas is the best-case scenario for the Phillies. The bad scenario is Pujols in Anaheim, but Harper is younger now than Pujols was when the Angels signed him. Harper won't be as good as younger A-Rod, but he'll deliver more value than 30-something Pujols.

They certainly got their money's worth out of him but the problem is they were a bad team before and continued bad after signing him. In that sense, it really was a bad deal because they didn't (couldn't?) do anything else to help the team. On the other hand, I don't think there's any way you can say the Phillies haven't been working to improve the entire team. If they don't win the East or gain a wild card spot it'll be because it's just a brutal division - not because they spent too much on Harper.
Yeah it wasn't a-rod's fault that the team wasn't good.

RE: Hot Stove 2018/19
So, anyone want to rank baseball's divisions after this? I will say that although I'm glad the NLEast got better, I wish it hadn't gotten this much better this quickly. I think whichever team(s) have major injuries to some of these newly-signed stars is going to determine who wins/loses as much as anything this year. Some big-time players. Braves gonna really need all those young pitchers in their next wave to be quite stellar. I still think Nats are at top so far, because I want to see how all these pieces fit together in Philly first. Braves definitely not at top, but how far down is anyone's guess.
