UTEP announces kickoff times plus recruiting news.
From El Paso’s FOX 14:

Kickoff times for Houston Baptist, Nevada, UTSA (Homecoming) and Louisiana Tech will start at 6pm Mountain. The Charlotte and Rice games in November will start at 1pm Mountain.

The 2019 recruiting class includes eight 3* recruits, the most since 2010 and third most since 2000. Even if Dana Dimel fails, at least he recruited FBS caliber players instead of the FCS or Div II players Sean Kugler recruited. That makes me optimistic.

Exactly. Why was Kugler aiming so low?

I remember a UTEP fan describing Kugler as opening the El Paso Times sports page on Saturday mornings and looking at the roster for all the HS games the night before. I don’t know how accurate that is but looking at the results, I don’t think he was wrong. Kugler won at first (he went to a bowl in his first season) with Mike Price’s players. Once he got all his players, the seasons were bad including the winless one.

Even though El Paso has 25 high schools, you don’t recruit there unless it’s for baseball and men’s soccer (ironically UTEP doesn’t offer both) otherwise it’s not known for producing big football and basketball recruits and the few ones usually go to a P5 school.

UTEP is getting a new president who was quoted in March that she believes athletics are the front porch for an institution. Look for her to clean house if the new AD who hired Dimel and Terry don’t start winning. Dr. Natalicio focused on the academic side and she did a great job in that area in her 30 years but she kinda neglected the athletic side. Wilson might focus more on the athletic side this time.

Haha that’s me. I’ve always said Kugler’s recruiting involved looking at the list of All-Districts players from the El Paso Times and sending them offers.

I didn’t know that about men’s soccer, but I knew the Miners didn’t do baseball. There are lots of schools with smaller budgets than UTEP who somehow find a way to do those sports. Weird that UTEP can’t find a way to make it work.
