I know who Marshall was just not USM. I don’t think that it’s that big of a deal

RE: The Flagships of C-USA?
I changed my mind thanks to this thread. Old Dominion and UTSA are clearly the flagship programs in CUSA. We all look forward to their continued dominance and national impact.

RE: The Flagships of C-USA?
Looking at this thru my blue tinted glasses, despite our current MBB failings, our 4 year slump in Baseball, and our dwindling attendance in Football (& we suck in Bowl games); the Raiders are still in the top of the overall heap of collegiate athletics in CUSA. Yes, we have under performed and should be a helluva lot better. However, since joining CUSA in most Olympic Sports, and Football, "in conference", MT has been a WINNER most years in most sports. My top 5 overall sports programs in CUSA based soley on Performance/Potential:
1. Middle Tennessee/UTSA
2. Western Kentucky/ Middle Tennessee
3. Marshall/FAU
4. La Tech/Old Dominion
5. North Texas/North Texas or UAB/UAB

No one said this conference was good. The question was who is the flagship program? Gotta be UTSA and Old Dominion. I mean, they have been in this conference for what....3-4 years? Can't be USM or Marshall. They have been in the conference far too long ad haven't won any football conference championships in a few years. I give the edge to Old Dominion and their 20,000 capacity "stadium".

You can have your opinion I’ll have mine. When I went to graduate school which was a P5 school in a good conference they never talked about being a flagship school of a conference. I doubt other conference ask that question as well. It’s a pretty stupid question. 21 years ago Marshall had a great season, the kids graduating now weren’t even born. I was in elementary school. So if a team starts winning consistently over the next 10 years are they the new flagship school? It can change a lot over a period of time. But to be honest I could careless. I went to Florida btw. But I claim UTSA.

Good point. MTSU and ODU are battling it out for the new flagship program. Everyone in the country knows this and immediately thinks of those two schools when CUSA comes up.....and UTSA.

Southern Miss is the most tenured I think and certainly has a solid record of past success. They would be my pick. I don’t think any other school has a much history in the league, brand and success - or a combination thereof. Jmo

"When CUSA comes up?" I didn't know that CUSA ever comes up in any conversations unless one of us or one of your former colleagues (all now in AAC) brings up the subject. One thing's for sure. With Southern Miss's budget (despite your historical record) and recent travails, the Golden Eagles are not the Flagship, are you?

RE: The Flagships of C-USA?
Here's the problem: CUSA doesn't have an identity, so therefore we don't have any flagships.
I bet if you polled every CFB fan in the world and asked them if they knew what conference we were all in half or maybe even the majority would guess wrong and say SB, MAC, AAC, or MWC than they would CUSA.
I bet half of all of our schools fans (casual or not) probably can't even name who all our conference brethren are.

The closest thing we have as a flagship in any sport is Rice baseball.

USM and Marshall. Period.
Not even LaTech (not for the strength of their program but due to the relatively short time they have been in the conference)

This.
Perhaps! But, I thought they were primarily our Flagship Academic Program. Been awhile since Rice went to the CWS.

RE: The Flagships of C-USA?
Currently none. There’s a few that have better recognition nationally than others but in our current iteration we’ve had several programs being dominate for a year or two then someone else takes their place in all the major sports. I don’t think this will change but I hope all our tides will rise so that when whatever team is currently on top will be gaining national recognition.
