Is there any evidence that Arkansas State has any interest in joining CUSA? Any evidence that any current member of the Belch views admission to CUSA as a “promotion”??
Texas State would gladly make the jump because they are a geographic outlier in their current set-up. For all the others, it’s A Lateral Move.
I have no clue how the administrator in the Belt feel. I know there are Sun Belt fans on this board that are as interested as those in the eastern division.
In my opinion, the desire for a regional bus conference is counterproductive for programs that want to grow their programs and become more relevant on the national level. A shift to cheaper regional conferences will lead to less media interest/coverage and create even greater separation from the P5's. I want no part of that for North Texas.
There is definitely a dichotomy involved. The AAC is spread all over hells half acre. We have some solid brands and most of the teams are in big market. Thats paid off in TV revenue.
But when it comes to selling tickets---I cant ever remember seeing more than a handful of UConn fans at a TDECU football game. Temple only sold 50 tickets to the AAC CCG in 2015 in TDECU. These far away teams are not going to fill any seats to speak of with traveling fans.
However, I remember seeing a shocking amount of maroon walking around when Texas State came to TDECU. When we returned the game, the UH fans filled most of Bobcat stadium's second deck. N Texas and UTSA came to TDECU in solid numbers as well. I suspect a few UH fans will be ticket buyers in Apogee this year. So, if all G5 revenue was primarily from ticket sales----and tv revenue was negligible---then it would be smart to be align in a manner that was focused on selling tickets. If that was the primary goal---UH would probably be in a conference with regional big public schools.
N Texas, Texas St, UTSA, Rice, LaTech, ULL, and Navy (the only AAC member that really sells tickets in our stadium) would make up the core of the UH theoretical "Butts in Seats" conference. Yeah---Rice is a small private...but our ticket sales go up for that game. Oddly, Rice fans dont really seem show up at TDECU in unusually high numbers----but it seems the sales lift is from more casual UH fans willing to come out to see the cross city rivalry. Lots of UH fans show up when the game is at Rice---so the "rivalry" effect works for them as well.

I have no way of knowing what the number of fans visiting Texas schools brought to Houston. But if it's in the thousands its clear the home fans didnt show up.
Winning and losing probably played a larger role. Early games usually will be top draw in a bad season.

P5 games are always going to draw well. Night games also draw better than day games—especially in Sweltering September. Context plays a role as well. In 2015, the Memphis and Navy game decided the division. That 2015 Temple game was actually the AAC CCG where Temple sold just 50 tickets from their allotment.

I agree with everyone of those. If a game has meaning it will usually be one of the higher attended games....especially by home team fans. In the end you want the home team fans filling seats and getting excited. Winning and losing will play a large role and early season games in a losing year will almost always be the highest attended games.
While playing Texas schools every now and then might excite some fans. Playing that same Texas team (that most fans perceive beneath the home team) year after year in the same conference at some point will lose its draw. Just like it will with say a Uconn.

We also need to get rivalries going. If we can get some fan base to dislike each other that would also help draw along with good games.

I have been to several UTSA-Tech games in the past. Nothing stale about this game in my opinion. We hate each other just enough to make it fun. I would skip other games before I would skip most of the CUSA West games because of budding rivalries. UNT is the same way but I don't hate UNT.

East Carolina University has enacted a hiring freeze thanks to a projected $16 million budget shortfall.
In a memo sent out this morning, Interim Chancellor Dan Gerlach cited a drop in graduate school enrollment along with fewer first-year students and transfer students coming in last fall was smaller than expected.
Gerlach said they can't wait for the problem to resolve itself and have come up with a four-step plan to cut spending.
• No new positions (other than those necessary to meet grant requirements) will be authorized without the approval of the Executive Council;
• Vacant positions (for all funding sources) are frozen, with exceptions subject to the recommendation of the Executive Council. Exceptions will be focused on life/safety of students and employees; regulatory and legal requirements; and enrollment growth
• No shifting of positions to support from existing fees with exceptions subject to the approval of the Executive Council.
That has nothing to do with Athletics, this the regular university side and entirely a state funding issue. Athletics are funded separately. The problem was the change the state made with the med school and it was costing ECU millions a year. Right now the state is withholding 35 million dollars in Medicare payments to Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody school of medicine.

Then why has Marshall had near $3 million total greater conference distributions in CUSA than ECU has had during their time in the AAC?

Entry fee and exist fee paid over time, no NCAA basketball credits paid to us, Tulane, or Tulsa our first year and lesser than everyone else until they cycled through. Bowl money you keep before the rest go to the pole, we haven’t been to bowl game, so....
Also, notice the trend, they are going up n opposite directions.
