NIT
17 UNLV Boise St.
17 Rice UW Milwaukee
17 Hawaii Utah St.
17 LSU OU
NCAA
18 Nevada Mich. St.
18 Maryland UTEP
19 OSU E. Wash.

Seems to be some good games this week. The NIT was nice to Hawaii and didn't make them play a play-in game. I noticed Tennessee in there too. I think Nevada can take Mich. St. A 10 seed is pretty good for the WAC.

Hard to get too involved this year.

Golden Hurricane Women Makes First Ever Postseason Appearance

March 14, 2004

Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's basketball team will make its first ever postseason appearance when the Golden Hurricane faces the Memphis Tigers in the first round of the 2004 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) at 7:00 p.m. this Thursday at The Pyramid in Memphis, Tennessee.

TU was one of 32 teams selected to the postseason WNIT, and one of two Western Athletic Conference teams. Rice will play at Arkansas State in the first round.

Tulsa has posted a 19-11 overall record this season and registered a third place WAC finish with an 11-7 mark. The Golden Hurricane advanced to the WAC Tournament semifinals before falling to tournament runner-up Rice.

Memphis is 20-9 overall this season and 11-3 at home. The Tigers posted a 9-5 league record, which was good enough for a sixth place finish in Conference USA. Memphis fell to Louisville in the C-USA Tournament quarterfinals. The Tigers are making their fourth appearance in the WNIT, but the first since the 2000-01 campaign.

Thursday's game will be broadcast live on KRSC 91.3 FM, or on the internet at http://www.TulsaHurricane.com.

A complete bracket can be viewed by visiting the WNIT website at http://www.womensnit.com.

The Tulsa women's team will have to uphold the honor of Tulsa BB this year. Congrats on their first postseason invite!!!!! Did you notice in the Men's NIT, If Boise and Rice were to win their 1st round games, they play each other in the 2nd round. Very unusally pairing but an easy way to get rid of a WAC team quickly??? The NIT is really harder to win than the NCAA for most teams involved, I didn't say there were better teams. A few teams that the NIT has selected, that they want in the finals, have the super easy road and that is all home games and supposedly easier competition. A 10th seed for Nevada isn't very good based on the numbers. Nevada is #29 RPI, with the 34th hardest schedule. Texas Tech is #30 RPI, with the 30th hardest schedule and they are a 8 seed, BIG DIFFERENCE with basically the same numbers!!!!! Even worse is Xavier, RPI of 35 and the 40th hardest schedule is a 7th seed!! The real killer is Washington, RPI of 60 and 69th hardest schedule and they are an 8th seed 03-puke Goes to show you, if you beat the No. 1 team you've got it made. A 10th seed for the WAC champion doesn't show too much respect but getting UTEP in was pretty nice and a little unexpected!!!!!!

Yeah, I was thrilled about getting both Nevada and UTEP in the dance. That's a bigger sign of respect - at large invites. I think UTEP was literally the last team in.

Once you get into the 7-10 slot, I'm not too concerned with seeding. Those four teams are about equal and have to play each other anyway. If you're an underappreciated mid-major team, the best seed in the tournament is an 11. You get the 6, then the 3, then the 2 before facing the 1. By the time you get to the 1 or 2, there may have been an upset or two.

Back to the NIT, it's obvious they don't want the WAC to succeed. Two of the teams who tied for third in the league (and were the 3 and 4 seeds in the WAC tourney) have to play opening round (play-in) games, and then they'd play each other if they both win! That automatically means only one can make it to the round of 16.

And Hawaii didn't fare much better. They're on the road at Utah State - the team that got jobbed the worst by the NCAA. Probably the best team not in the Dance. Then they'll play Creighton, Nebraska or Troy State, with OU and Missouri after that. Rugged.

No, they sure don't. Nobody does. Rat bastids.

This is not just obvious, it's an axiom -- a friggin' universal truth that is so fundamental, so inherent in the system, that it's unprovable. It just is... it's simply a fact.

So, we get rigged-up seedings and shipped off to the four corners of the NCAA earth. We'll just have to go kick some a$$ (well, as much as we are able, up to having to knock each other out) and show them how wrong they are. 04-rock

Two very nice wins, Boise ST and especially Hawaii beating Utah St on their home court. I guess Utah St didn't deserve to be in the dance after all. What happened to Rice??? The UW-M usually scores 50-60 points a game and they score 91?? I thought that was a misprint when I saw it, maybe 71 points. Maybe UW-M shot 90% from the field?? Anyway two out of three ain't that bad!!!! 04-bow

Considering that if Rice had won, they'd be playing Boise State next... it's academic. I would have loved to see Rice win (and win and win), but only two WAC teams can advance. Would've preferred it to be Rice than Boise State, but we can still root for an all-WAC final in NYC.

What he said (with a much stronger preference for "if Rice had won", of course).

Go WAC... time to kick some butt. 04-cheers

More news from the NIT...

Boy, did Hawaii get rewarded for knocking off Utah State or what? For the first time since I can remember, Hawaii gets a HOME game in the NIT on Monday night. To make it even better, they get the winner of the Nebraska-Niagara game on Friday night. Since both those teams had to play opening round games, whoever makes the long haul to islands will be playing their third game in less than a week... as if the Friday-to-Monday turnaround for a 2,000 mile road trip wasn't hard enough.

I'm thrilled to see somebody from the WAC actually get a good draw for once!!! 04-rock

btw, Boise State also got a home game. Considering they're playing Wisconsin-Milwaukee... and the winner plays Marquette (from, um... Milwaukee), it's just beyond amazing they gave the Broncos the home game instead of keeping UWM at home to stack the deck for an all-Milwaukee game next week.

Amazing but true... the WAC caught two breaks in one day. :D

UTEP did good!!!!!!!!!!! You would have a hard time saying they couldn't play in the ACC when they play the ACC tourney champ that close!! I think the fouls played a big part in the game, congrats referees

I am so happy Nevada knocked off Mich St!!!!!!!!! 04-bow Now Digger Phelps and that guy on CBS will stop talking about looking forward to seeing Gonzaga play Mich St. They said that several times like a win a over Nevada was automatic. I don't know why Nevada even bothered playing the game-----------Oh yeah, THEY BEAT MICH ST!!!!!!!!!! :D Boy, those guys are in love with Tom Izzo and maybe the Big Ten too. The guy, can't think of his name right now, on CBS, said there was no question Mich St was playing the best of any Big 10 team at the end of the year--------Well, IT'S THE END OF THEIR YEAR NOW!!!!!!! 03-nutkick

yeeesh, fish... I wouldn't go that far.

UTEP is darn good, and is capable of beating just about any team in the country on a given night. But they're not quite ready to challenge Duke for the ACC regular season championship.

I was proud of 'em, tho. And I'm doubly proud of Nevada! Great come-from-behind win! I knew they would do it...

I don't know if you saw the selection show on Sunday or not but Billy Packer went on a rant about how St. Joe's didn't deserve a number one seed. Shortly after that they interviewed the St. Joe's coach and the first thing he said was "What team does Billy play for? We're ready to play them now!". He was pissed and that's one of the funniest things I've seen in awhile.

It's ridiculous that the announcers and sportswriters get so tied up in their own bias' that they can't understand the parity that is college basketball today. Any team can beat any other team on a given night and teams from the WAC and other leagues can play with their favorites toe-to-toe.

I agree NN, any of the top teams from the top10 conferences can play with anybody and on a given night even win!!! The gaudy records of some BIG Time schools can be explained by what is called home court advantage, almost every year, Syracuse plays their first 10 games at home, as do many programs if they're not playing in a pre-season tourney. The NCAA tourney shows what happens in many cases when they play on a neutral court. Over the years, Tulsa would have an even better record than it's had, if they played 20 home games a year and 8 on the road--------That's a hel! of an advantage!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only pick on Syracuse because a couple of years ago, they were playing on TV in early January and it was their first game away from the Carrier Dome---12 home games to start the year!!! There isn't complete parity but it's a lot more than the TV and newspaper pundits would lead you to believe!!
