RE: 20-21 bearcats
Jarron Cumberland was an outstanding Bearcat and terrific college player--I think we all agree on that. But as we saw early last season, his style of play was much better suited to Mick's game plan. Some of the early troubles last year seemed to be reconciling Jarron's game with Brannen's game plan. It all worked out well enough in the end to reach the tournament--had there been one. And both Jarron and Brannen must share some credit for making it work.
I think our hope is (and it's the hope of every fanbase after a coaching transition begins) that new players were recruited because this staff believed they had the ability to combine to create a unit where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. We'll have a lot better idea if that worked out in 90 days.

Who will be the leader on this team? I like KW but he seems like a quiet guy. Will the transfer from Michigan be that guy?

I'm not sure how so many people have talked themselves into the view that a senior preseason all american just wasn't quite right for Brannen.
As for the whole being greater than the sum, I don't think that this roster was some grand plan. Seems to me that Brannen's been cobbling together the best talent he could find from any source: grad transfers, regular transfers, Cronin's leftovers, freshman recruits from all over the country, international guys. I figured year 2 would be a bit of a mess while he's forced to do a mini rebuild, but Brannen's pulled out all the stops to put together 2 really talented rosters, all things considered. These may be more of the types of players he wants, but I think this group was the best he could get under the circumstances and not an expression of some philosophy against having Jarron Cumberland type studs.

DeJulius played behind one of the best leaders in the Big 10, Zavier Simpson, during his 2 years at Michigan, so I hope that translates to him taking on a significant role with this year's team. He does seem to have the personality/swagger to be a vocal leader.

A healthy Jarron would have been killer last year. We sadly didn't have a healthy Jarron. We got there for about a month and the team played magnificent basketball, before getting hurt again and being very up and down.

In addition to all of this, people either forget or overlook the fact that Jarron didn't practice with the team until late in the preseason because he was injured and basically lived in a walking boot for most of the season. Those are factors that are out of both Jarron and Brannen's control, it could be argued that it was the #1 factor in his underwhelming performance last season, but both Jarron and Brannen should get praise for overcoming that hurdle.

Cannot stress this enough. Jarron's health was the biggest missing piece last year.

With a healthy Jarron, I think we win 22-23 games, which would be a hell of an accomplishment for a first-year coach and all the roster turnover.

We had a healthy Jarron for about 2-3 games last year, and we looked pretty damn good. Then he got banged up again, Sorrolla left, and we went back into a funk.

20-21 bearcats
I'm not sure how injured Jarron was but I will say that when a player commands such a large, uh, "presence" in the locker room, and their play isn't neccesarily backing it up, sometimes it's healthy for a team to reset afterwards. That's not to diminish what Jarron accomplished here, but I think the team is ready to move on to a different era.

Agree 100%. A great Bearcat and career at that, but I think team and many fans are ready for next era.

The thing you have to remember with Rap is that he's not some unknown low major kid that had a surge late in his career. He's a 4 star B1G kid that had a bad rash of injuries early and dropped down to get a fresh start. Big difference...

I don't even know what this means given that he played out his eligibility here, but it is silly how so many seem to think that not having a player like Jarron Cumberland is a good thing.

I myself was optimistic heading into post season this past year as team finally seemed to be meshing. Wouldn’t have been surprised if we made a tourney run to Sweet 16 or Elite 8.
I’m not saying it’s a positive Cumberland is gone but I myself am ready for a new era under Brannen.

It's tough when you have a team that is conditioned to look to a guy like JC given his junior season. With him being banged up before the season even started it really shifted the paradigm of how they play in a very short period of time and you combine that with a new coaching staff whose philosophy was different it was a transitional season. I thought they played very hard, but Colgate loss hurt on such a fluke ending. Onward.
