'78 Independence Bowl ECU vs. LaTech
Hey, any La Tech fans:
https://twitter.com/ECUAthletics/status/...7983241219

On ecupirates.com this Saturday they are re-airing the 1978 Independence Bowl between our two schools. I've never seen this one period.

You guys might be interested to see it again too.

Unless the outcome is different than the original, I saw enough the first time in '78. 04-cheers

I would prefer to see the Indy bowl game from the prior year, in 1977. LA Tech defeated Louisville in that one.

Unfortunately, ECU and Pat "tie" Dye kicked our tails in the 1978 Indy Bowl. 03-banghead

By the way, I attended both of these Indy Bowl games. 04-cheers

Yep, I attended both the '77 Indy Bowl Tech 24 Louisville 14 and the '78 Indy Bowl Tech 13 ECU 35...Ugh! on that one. But! got to meet John Wayne who was that year's Omar Bradley Spirit of America Award recipient. As I recall that was John Wayne's last public appearance.

I'm sure this was the catalyst for the re-airing (and ECU fans are already aware), but Pat Dye passed away 3 days ago. He was 80.

The Los Angeles Times obituary for Wayne (June 12, 1979) said his "last public appearance had come as poignant end to the Academy Awards television broadcast on April 9, when the gaunt actor walked onstage to present the Oscar for best picture to 'The Deer Hunter.' I'm sure that might have been an angle for going for that game.

I was only 3 at the time LOL.

Hollywood? that doesn't count as "public." I'm talking about being around real folks!

John Wayne was near one of the concession stands under the stadium, just speaking with people. He was so genuine. I got to shake his hand and I muttered something dumb like, "I like your movies." He smiled and said, "Thanks." I couldn't think of something more profound to say in the moment.

That ’78 Independence Bowl was also the last game for LT’s Head Coach Maxie Lambright, who stepped down after 12 successful seasons. He died about 13 months later at a young age (55). Not sure if that was a longstanding health issue or something sudden. RIP
