Big 12 media value drops to as low as 9 million per school
https://www.cbssports.com/college-footba...2-for-sec/

Big 12's sad, tragic potential end
In 2016, Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard made this prescient statement: "The Big 12 exists because we have Texas and Oklahoma in the room. If we take Texas and Oklahoma out of the room, we're the Mountain West Conference."

Those words hit like a sledgehammer today. As the SEC shocked the world by preparing to assume the 'Horns and Sooners, the Big 12 lost 50% to 75% of its value, several industry sources tell CBS Sports. Their TV contracts with ESPN and Fox contain language that allows the Big 12 networks to reduce payouts if there is a loss of membership.

"When you're losing two of the most visible programs, the network has the right to come and say, 'We're going to reduce the rights by X.'" one longtime, high-profile administrator said.

That means the Big 12 deal could drop from $37 million in annual revenue to as low as $9 million per school. Considering there aren't two schools available that come close to replacing the value of Texas and Oklahoma, the Big 12 is in troubled waters to say the least.

There's a real possibility the conference could be scattered to the four winds. What a shame. Iowa State, Kansas State, West Virginia and Baylor look particularly vulnerable. Those schools are neither in a major market nor an established national brand.

What's next? The Big 12 seems to be the hunted instead of the hunter. It retains autonomous (Power Five) legislative voting rights within the NCAA ... if it stays together. As mentioned, some Big 12 schools could find a lifeline in the Pac-12 -- just not all of them.

American the beautiful?
The American Athletic Conference has shown an interest in taking in at least some Big 12 schools. It flirted with Boise State last year. Does some combination of Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech make sense? Would the AAC eventually replace the Big 12 as a Power Five conference?

"You have to come with an aggressive idea that the conference not only is going to exist but the conference is going to develop a program that is going to make them stronger than what would be expected with the absence of Texas and Oklahoma," that source said.

If the Big 12 dissolves, everyone moves up a spot in college football's pecking order. That means the AAC all but becomes an automatic qualifier for the expanded playoff
if you assume it is the next-strongest conference after what will then be the four super conferences (SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Pac-12).

In the suggested 12-team playoff, the top six conference champions get automatic bids. AAC commissioner Mike Aresco has long stumped for his league to receive "Power Six" status. That may now come by attrition.

Figure on the AAC adding at least one school to make it an even 12.
The conference has 10 years to run on a 12-year deal with ESPN that is worth a reported $1 billion. Even in its current state, the worth of some Big 12 schools would be a boost to the AAC.

RE: Big 12 media value drops to 9 million per school
Dodd is a doofus. I don't think his sources are lying to him, I think their value did drop by that much, but 50% of 18.5 million and 75% is 9.25 million, and his assumptions are bad conjecture. If it's closer to 50% then they aren't going to die. If it's closer to 75% they still probably won't die because they'll collect so much in exit fees and tournament credits that the ones without options better than the AAC will cling to the sinking ship and some combination of AAC/MWC teams will join.

Yeah and the point is if they keep it together they retain autonomy. Why would I leave an autonomus conference even if I had to add 5? Will they add the value of Texas and OU? No? But there are enough properties especially out west that they could weather the storm.

If it's a merger. The full conference becomes Autonomous. Book it!

It’s such a silly premise that the B12 is going to fold.

Even with 3 remaining schools, it keeps on going and all of our programs will beg, borrow or steal to be a part of it.

It's looking more like a merger will happen to me. This may be the lead up to the split. 5 x 16 team conferences gives you 80 teams. That's your cut line. I'm sure a couple indies will tag along but thats the line.

No way. The tv money will be zilch if all the best programs are gone. The AAC will be in a much better position for long term success.

Extra 2 mil and autonomy status…. Still worth the jump from AAC to Big12.

Hopefully ESPN says screw this Fox contact, Big12 leftovers come to the AAC and we’ll pay $10 mil per school.

A merger isn’t happening either.

A merger is technically a consolidation and requires a surviving entity and one or more that dissolves upon the consolidation. For nonprofits all are technically dissolved with the formation of a new entity. No benefit to it. You’d lose all of the credits, agreements, etc.

The leftover B12 schools are getting $38 million a year right now and will through 2025 regardless of what conference TX and OK are in...their tier 1 and 2 rights belong to the deal for all of their home games until June 2025.

Why would any of them agree to come to the AAC for $10 million? They will each make nearly 4 times that next year by standing Pat and backfilling...plus the NCAA credits and exit fees as a deferred payday.

The one school we add, if the constellations align, is West Virginia. BIG has to steal the primo PAC schools for that to happen.

I don't think you read the article. It said their TV partners will reduce their contract. And Texas and Oklahoma will pay up to have their Tier 1 and 2 rights released.

If you think that the B12 will keep those rights until 2025, and not be negotiated out, I have some land to sell you.

Current deal is not getting reduced if the GOR still gives Fox all rights to TX and OK home games regardless of what conference they are in. Come 2025, sure. New deal, completely different dollars.

I hate realignment but primarily because of all the half baked notions fueled by click bait and things people hope happens that they defend as fact.

RE: Big 12 media value drops to 9 million per school
between you and troy must we make a new thread for every article that suggests a possibility of the aac raiding the big 12

its like you are trying to convince us, as if fans changing our mind would make any difference...they are still going to raid us

i get that the aac raiding the big 12 is the new hot take by sports analyst.. but they are sports analyst for a reason and not one person with that take has added nuance outside of sports....
all their takes is that if the big 12 loses more members than texas and ou the aac will be stronger athletically and will become the raider... it doesnt work like that

1) the big 12 other members arent getting picked up by anyone...you can write as much reallignment fan fiction the pac 12 and big 10 arent adding anyone

2) we've talked ad nauseam about this, no one is giving up a seat at the automous table to join a conference desperately trying to get there

imagine someone make a new thread for every article saying the aac will get raided

also i love how your thread thread take creative choices... the pac 12 one said, the "pac 12 interested in big 12 teams" .. and this one the big 12 value drops to 9 mil...when they say thats the extremely low case...20mil per is one the table with a 50% drop

Right. It won’t be a true merger, but from a practical standpoint—it will look very similar to one if only 3-5 Big12 members remain. The more that remain in the B12—the number left behind in the AAC gets larger. If it’s just 3-5 teams left—it’s possible every AAC team could make it in.

Jesus this place needs a Zoloft every time this topic comes up.

Despite their woes, B12 nonprofit corporation is not folding.

It will hang onto ncaa credits and buyout penalties. We’ve been through this with the BE and it will play out similarly.

A few schools at worst will be left. They will backfill. They will split up all the $& that’s left and will distribute some to the new schools when they negotiate the next deal.

And there will be a long line of AAC and MWC teams sending resumes to the B12 office. It’s how we do.

Attackcoog gets it.

You can have a merger with non-profits that keeps assets of the old entity. Happens all the time with hospitals. Of course some nuances of law are different, but there is certainly a way, if they went that route They'll be able to put a nice AAC banner in Boone Pickens.

I heard after Texas and Oklahoma leave, the B12 will be paid in malt liquor and cold medicine.
