Who on here has seen the video and can post a link? I'd like to form an opinion based on the actual source material and not one alleged quote pulled out of context and posted on facebook.

Have you seen it? Nothing on the internet is ever gone for good. I am willing to bet that someone grabbed a screen capture of the video before it was removed.

No it was the actual training, I watched it. Foxnews reported or not, that video was the actual training slides and it was presented on screen by two JMU students. I personally didn’t care for it but I’m not quite as up in arms about it as others.

The video was a typical boring training video....certainly wasn't what has been portrayed around here and on Fox.

Exactly. These people are bigots using indoctrination to create more bigots. They have no problem pre-judging you by the color of your skin, yet get mad when you tell them they're being prejudiced (and racist.) They can't see their prejudice because their bigotry is in their way. Their response is to call you an oppressor because you won't accept their indoctrination or their bigotry.

Can someone remind me which party has the snowflakes and which party hates cancel culture? All these old white dudes crying that they were called an oppressor (they weren't) and threatening to stop donations has me confused.

People are taking this way too personally. White, Christian men are oppressors, not oppressed, and always have been in America. Don't look at it as "hey I'm a white, Christian man so you're saying I'm bad!" It's just about what groups are generally oppressors/privileged and what groups are generally oppressed/targeted.

If it's not a matter of taking it too personally for anyone here and is a matter of thinking white men are oppressed or that oppression doesn't exist then holy crap.

As we navigate this journey together, I ask for empathy and support of one another. During this time of new beginnings, JMU and its leaders will be welcoming individuals from every imaginable background, and it is critical at these times to confront challenges and build strength and solidarity among us. I think well said- just my opinion- conversations around race and inclusion can be uncomfortable I agree 1000% on that but they need to continue. It’s as President Obama (then Presidential candidate Obama) once said in his famous speech in Philadelphia. Regardless of politics I think everyone can understand that There are many sides to this and we all need to try to understand where the other person is coming from.

I’m not saying that the reaction to this training is the same as the stuff that I see on my social media in the same vain as “shut up and dribble” etc but my feeling is that a lot of mostly white people are fatigued by the conversation- why- in part because it’s uncomfortable for them. That’s not a good enough reason IMO to stymie the conversation. It still needs to happen. Now there’s a line and if a race is truly being vilified or labeled that is wrong and has swung the other way but I don’t think that’s the case. I think people are just fatigued and uncomfortable by the line of conversation and taking it that way.

I just wish our University president could use the word “myriad” appropriately. Kind of embarrassing.

This made national news because it is fodder to a certain consumer. It drives ratings, that’s all.

Now, let’s back out and take the 10,000 ft view. An orientation training material used some poor choices of words. Do you honestly think JMU, a school that is 90% white, views the majority of our alumni as “oppressors”. Come on…what beyond this “story” would lead you to believe that? All I ever received from JMU is thanks for my support.

The reality is JMU has put out a press release stating that this video/training is no longer occurring. They know a mistake was made. It will be fixed, but don’t expect equity and inclusivity training to stop.

But please, cut our pathetically small donor base to make your point. I’m sure you’ll ***** when we can’t go FBS b/c we don’t have the money.

I don't believe they are "uncomfortable" at all. They are just sick of being accused of something they aren't.

Let me get this straight

1- After the training was completed, student employees were sent an email instructing them to "not share these materials with others."

2 - JMU had the video removed from YouTube today after thousands of viewers rated it as repulsive

3 - Various JMU agents have taking action to "lock down" this communication thread

Now Alger sends this missive with his air of superiority, lecturing us like a bunch of fifth graders at a school assembly.

He wants support and trust as we navigate this journey together? He wants a climate of transparency with discussion on difficult topics?

Are you kidding me?

Curious. You’ve been here for decades, always bitching and moaning. Never once adding anything. What would you say you do here?

This is rich to say the least. This man has been in charge of this university for 9 years. If he has not been able to "develop and foster an inclusive environment" by this time then it's on him. I consider this an abject failure and an indictment of his leadership and management skills. Pathetic. Furthermore, if this were about having difficult "conversations" it would not be so objectionable. But there is no conversation going on. Training and indoctrination are not conversations. Those of you who think this is ok better take a long, hard look at yourselves. Teaching young, impressionable minds that an entire group of people are oppressors, simply by virtue of the color of their skin, is abhorrent. Likewise, convincing others that they are oppressed, simply by virtue of the color of their skin, is equally abhorrent. Wake up people. This is all about divide and conquer. Create a crisis and then convince the public that you are the only ones who can fix it.

So they pulled the plug on this training? But wasn’t it a training program that has already been conducted and wasn’t going to be done again this year anyway?

Will be moving this thread to the off topic section. Discussion can resume there where it is more free to share one's views on the subject.
