Tulsa loses to Boise State. Not a great non con for the conference so far.

I think where Houston had improved the most over the past two seasons defensively Is forcing turnovers. They used to focus less on generating TO’s and more just making teams take tough shots and breaking their offense.
But Houston adding the Turnover creation to its defense makes it that much more dangerous. They now have the #1 defense in kenpom
They are also fouling WAY WAY less then they ever have. That alone helps them even more.

I noted this tonight. Specifically with our bigs. The ability to defend without fouling. Makes us much more dangerous.

Every year prior to this… Houston was one of the worst fouling teams in the country. But I think Fabian being a super senior helps and having athletic bigs who can guard anyone also helps.
UC I know doesn’t have the scorers or scheme to beat Houston this year. I think it could get ugly

All that said… Houston has only played 1 top 50 offense all year and that’s Oregon and I think they are a bit over rated as every time they played a good team they lost by at least double digits.
Alabama will be the first real test and likely the only offensive test they will face all season long because of how dreadful the AAC is.

their defense isnt the same, sampson noted something about Houston after the wisconsin loss and that resonated with me as i rewatched the memphis game.. he said houston was "in front" of wisconsin the 1st half, but let them run their stuff, that what makes a defense good is uncomfortablility, don't let them run what they want to, make them feel pressured into making bad decision, make them run whatever they think is desperately available not what they want to planned before the game
that was Memphis last year.. even getting the ball over half court with memphis last year was a monster , memphis harrassed you with length.. that is no the case this year (so far) last year the defense was the harrasment and effort, that was boosted by lenght... this year they are just defense is just length.. 6'3 guards shooting over 6'7 is hard, and every shot at the rim can be swatted by duren/williams/minott, that's the defense.. memphis will let you run whatever you want, let you pass it to whoever, you just have to deal with the size..and as seen with georgia there are many ways to get around height/shot blockers (like screens, or using the rim as protections etcs.) that is a drastic difference from last year
honestly, the offense is pretty much the same level (wasnt that great last year either)..
P, there you go making a judgment based on one game. Until the Georgia game, we played great D again. For whatever reason, our guys decided not to play D that game.
There is a lot of drama and behind the scenes turmoil going on. Nobody was trying on D. That's what Penny's outburst was about after the game.
IMO, what Penny isn't doing is taking responsibility for this mess. I'm not sure we win another game in the next 2 weeks. We are dysfunctional as a team right now.
P.S. The offense should look the same in the Georgia game as last year. It's what we used to go on a roll the last half of the season. Penny installed it right before this game, b/c what we were doing before was such a disaster.
You will have to sweep Houston if you don’t win another game in the next two weeks. That would be awful.
If we don't win in the next 2 weeks, it won't matter what we do against Houston. You know me. I try to be realistic, but I'm usually optimistic. Not right now. We're a mess.
What's frustrating is the problems have to do with everything but talent. Chemistry, coaching, attitudes...
I think yall have no worse than one of the T-5 rosters in the history of this league. Failing to at least make the tournament would be a colossal failure. I was really optimistic about Penny after the way yall finished last season but now, not so much.
We'll see. Pre-season, I thought they might make the E8, and at least the S16. Now, anything can happen. They still have time to turn it around, but I'm skeptical.

i think that is just the natural talents of the players .. sampson deemphasizes turnovers, people who normally have high steal counts are normally getting beat alot (on the times they go for steals and misses).. the only taught turnover is under cutting passing on the double team..
but this year is rare in the fact that its the 1st team with players who were good on defense before they came to Houston with natural turnover ability, jamal shead was a 4star for defense, taze moore was the WAC dpoy, kyler edwards, jwan roberts were all defensive players before houston... players that already had stealing/turnover ability
sampson prior to this year was normally "i recruit good offensive payers, then i teach them how to play D"
i noted this after the rice game, that this is probably going to be the best defense in the Sampson era..Houston defense normally gets really good on defense by midseason, we've never been this good this early

SMU faces Vandy at Moody this afternoon when most of the free world will be watching meaningful football.
Can the Ponies sustain the very impressive play they demonstrated in a full 40 minute effort against UNLV?
Will there be further lineup fiddling or will the Mad Scientist go with the smaller, quicker starting lineup that played very well defensively.
Can they continue to move the ball well and get high percentage shots?
Will Isaiah Jasey continue his “shooting streak?” (He actually made ONE layup vs UNLV!)
When will Zack Nutall get hot? Hasn’t happened yet.
Will Tristan Clark and Jahmar Young continue to see their minutes increase?
I probably won’t watch until late tonight but I’m really seriously curious to see if the Weathers boyscan come off the bench and produce like they did against the Rebels.
If this stuff is sustainable they’ll be a pretty good team.... however... they’ll still be in trouble vs bigger teams with good half court games.
Oh and btw: f@@k Sonny Dykes. Purple becomes you.

i said this earier and and i 100% stand by this...
memphis made you uncomfortably last year, they didnt let you run what you want, and harassed you, ... this year Memphis defense is "we are tall and jump high" and that is it... Memphis will let you run whatever you want, get the ball to whoever you like..its just can they shoot over 6'7, and take a shot over a 6'11 shot blocker
while shooting over 6'8 is hard, its not the magical defense they had last year... when Memphis roster was finalized i imagine Memphis last years intensity with this years length and though teams would have a nightmare just trying to get the ball past half court .. that hasnt been the case, the intensity is gone

Completely unimpressed with Bates. Should've stayed in high school another year.
