22 of the top 50 NET teams are from non-P5 conferences
UPDATE:
The situation for the non-P5 conferences has continued to improve. Now, 22 (44%) of the top 50 teams in the NET are non-P5 teams.
Breakdown by conference:
AAC: 2
A-10: 1
Big East: 6
CUSA: 1
MVC: 1
MWC: 4
OVC: 2
SoCon: 1
WCC: 4
17 of the top 40 teams are non-P5 teams.
The teams can be viewed clicking on the PDF.
If anyone knows how to post the PDF into the actual post, rather than just attaching it, please let me know. Thanks.

RE: 54% more non-P5 teams in the NET top 40 at mid-season than there were in March, 2021.
.
Caveat: a lot can change in the NET rankings and at bracketmatrix.com in a week or two. Some who look at these numbers may conclude that the will most likely be a one-bid conference this year, but bear this in mind:
All it takes for the AAC to be a 2-bid conference is for a team other than Houston to win the AAC tournament, and a team other than the regular season champion has won the AAC tournament 50% of the time when there was a single regular season champion.
Moreover, every AAC team that has won 24 games has earned a NCAA bid, and both SMU and Cincy can win 24 games if they win 10 more games this season, including AAC tourney games.
. . . . . . . .
Side-note: There were only 7 non-P5 at-large teams in the 2021 NCAA tournament. As a result, there were 29 P5 at-large teams in 2021 - - more than in any previous tournament.
P5 teams in final 2020-21 NET top 40: 39 (72.5%)
P5 teams that received NCAA at-large bids in 2021: 29 (78.4%)
non-P5 teams in final 2020-21 NET top 40: 11 (27.5%)
non-P5 teams that received at-large bids in 2021: 8 (21.6%)
.
Now, compare these numbers with the numbers of P5 and non-P5 team that received at-large bids in 2010:
P5 teams that received NCAA at-large bids in 2010: 19 (55.9%)
non-P5 teams that received at-large bids in 2021: 15 (44.1%)
.
The current NET rankings with 17 (42.5% vs. 23 P5 teams (57.5%) non-P5 teams in the top 40 are much more consistent with the number of at-large bids earned by non-P5 teams in 2010 than with the bloated number (78.7%) of at-large bids that went to P5 teams in 2021.
.
From this standpoint, it may not be quite as surprising as it seemed that the non-P5 teams out-performed the P5 teams so convincingly in last season's NCAA tournament.
It would be great to see the selection committee award at-large bids on a much more proportional basis this year. If that happens, the current NET rankings suggest that 40% or more of the at-large bids could go to non-P5 teams this year.
In an average year, there are approx. 35 at-large bids (the number varies, depending on how many "dark horse" teams win conference tournaments).
40% of 35 at-large bids would be 14 at-large bids. That should be the approximate number of at-large bids that the non-P5 teams should be awarded this year if their NET rankings hold up.
That would mean about 6 more at-large bids to non-P5 teams this year (up from 8 last season).
The NET rankings suggest that 4 or 5 of those might go to BE and WCC teams. The others could go to conference such as the AAC, A-10, or MWC.

UAB is in a good spot at the moment being 38 in the NET. I think we have a chance to get an at large bid if we were to run the table to the conference championship and then lose the championship game. We'd finish 29-5 and a NET likely in the top 40.
Winning out until then is a lot to ask though. Starts with a tough one tonight @ WKU.

P5 is really more a football term.

19 (43.2%) of the top 44 teams in the NET are non-P5 teams.
If 43% of the top 44 teams in the FINAL NET ranking are non-P5 teams, then at least 40% of the at-large bids (14 out of 35 at-large bids per year, on average) should go to non-P5 teams.
Since only 7 at-large bids went to non-P5 teams last year, that would represent a 100% increase in the number of at-large bids that go to non-P5 teams.

P5 is a useless term in basketball. Big East is not some “non-power” league. The AAC has put more teams in than some “P5” leagues. There isn’t a clear top 5 in basketball, and if there is, Big East is in it and Pac 12 out of it

WKU is a bit down this year, but that's still a solid win. Good to see UAB athletics hitting on all cylinders right now. Easily the strongest addition to the new AAC, and a program that will immediately be one of the conference's strongest.

You forget that NET is designed to penalize non-power conference teams.
Expect that non-P5 population to drop precipitously between now and March.

That's actually not correct. The P5 conferences are also known as autonomy conferences, or as the P5/A5.
Their status as autonomy conferences doesn't just apply to football. The A5 conferences are treated differently by the NCAA overall - - not just with respect to football, but with respect to basketball and all other sports, as well.
The P5 are also different in many other notable respects - particularly the fact that they receive several times more revenue from the broadcasters. That isn't just "football revenue." It's overall revenue.
So it's perfectly justifiable to call them the P5 basketball conferences. It is just as justifiable as using the term "Major 7" to describe the P5, Big East, and AAC.
