That was brutal. I couldn't watch it all but it was evident the implosion was pending. Tough way to end the season.

The whole Stillwater Regional has been a wild ride. Outside of maybe the Day 1 games, every other matchup on both sides of the bracket has been nothing short of electric baseball:

- MSU coming back on GCU in the last 2 innings
- Arkansas' late charge to put OSU in the loser's bracket
- MSU jumping on OSU and going up 12-0, only for OSU to catch fire and win 29-15
- OSU hanging 4 runs on Arkansas in the 10th to stave off elimination and force a sudden death game for the whole regional

It would be nice if Lopes were the REASON for some of this excitement/drama and not the RECIPIENT of it, but GCU athletics needs to move beyond an apparent "just happy to be here" mentality before that can happen. That being said, the baseball fan in me has still enjoyed following the play in this regional.

RE: Baseball Time
After all this, with one day to go, we have the following:

Three SEC schools going to Omaha.

Two future SEC schools going to Omaha.

One Notre Dame.

Two bids left to claim, with the advantage going to two Pac-12 schools ahead of a Big East school and another current SEC school. Judging from current form, it’s not much of an advantage.

Sigh.

I watched part of the Oregon State game last night and caught part of the interview with the former OSU coach. For those that might not know his teams won three CWS titles. He was asked about how he built the program, his response interesting in that while there were several philosophical concepts about focus on teamwork and getting players that wanted to follow those concepts, his first focus was on quality pitching and the catcher's spot. OSU wasn't a historically solid program when he arrived.

I stated what I believed I heard in the interview and there are different opinions on what is solid or expected or elite. Maybe I should have used the word elite, but I also heard a comment that East Carolina might be the best program to never have made it to the CWS. CWS appearances and championships are how I believe many including myself tend think of historically solid programs. I believe there are several schools from what are not thought of as elite conferences that are historically solid. I would include Freson State, possibly Long Beach and Sac St in that group. Conversely, I am not sure I would include Wichita St who although they have a CWS Championship their recent history has too many down years.

Only one CWS appearance prior to Casey’s run… in 1952. Make of that what you will.

Finally ponied up for a D1baseball.com membership and found they have an up-to-date Transfer Tracker. Lowkey kind of wish I hadn't now, as it turns out some solid players for GCU (along with some I've never heard of) are on their way out...

Johnny Weaver, SR, INF
Adrian Torres, JR, OF
Taisei Yahiro, JR, LHP
Ambren Votik, JR, INF
Carter Powell, ??
Andrew Cusick, ??

Should've known that question was coming! Haha... I'll see if I can throw together a quick list, but please don't expect a NMSUPistolPete-level break down. Will try to get it up here in a bit...

RE: Baseball Time
Looks like GCU Baseball players caught wind of Stank going to USC just before the July 1 deadline to enter the transfer portal, and the updated list is brutal:

Connor Markl
Homer Bush Jr.
Blake Reilly
Jacob Wilson
Eli Ankeney
Austin Puett
Daniel Avitia
Ryan Schiefer
Jacob Martinez
Sy Snedeker
Nicholas Hansen
Jonathan Weaver
Adrian Torres
Taisei Yahiro
Ambren Voitik
Carter Powell
Andrew Cusick

Hoping at least a few stay, but could EASILY see dudes like Jacob Wilson and Daniel Avitia sliding over to SC with Stank.

Reports now coming out of D1baseball.com that GCU will hire Gregg Wallis back as HC, after leaving for an assistant job at Ohio State just over 2 weeks ago. Love the move for GCU and hope the continuity means a lot of these guys stay.

The true test of a program's status. What is the success from the coaching tree? Can a former assistant take over and maintain the results of the mentor?
