Let’s face reality, no one is coming to W&M unless they are looking for the non basketball elements we offer.
Davidson is a private, they are located basically in Charlotte, and they are THE college to attend in the state of North Carolina that isn't Duke if you go private. Oh, and there's the little know fact that a guy named Stephen Curry played there and a father named Dell Curry that played nearby for the Hornets.

Hess, McDowell (?), Tarpey, Thornton, Dixon (for a while), Prewitt, Cohn, Milan, Van Vilet, Knight.... We had a pretty good thing going there for players going pro.
Not directed at W&M but at the entire mid major basketball level. No matter who did play for money from W&M, my point is that the vast majority who go to midmajors won't, that includes UNCW as well.

How is that a problem for us to follow. We are ranked in the top 40 universities in the entire country, a public Ivy, graduated 3 U.S. Presidents, home to 4 of 5 CAA Rhodes Scholars, home of Phi Beta Kappa and have two NFL football coaches, more than any University in the country.
We have a lot more going for us than Davidson. Except basketball.

Showing my age here but Davidson had quite the basketball program back in the 60's in the Southern Conference with star players like Fred Hetzel, Dick Snyder, and Mike Maloy.

Maybe you missed the part about Charlotte. I've been to Williamsburg and William and Mary, where is the thirty story Bank of America building, Truist building, Wachovia building and the 1,000,000+ people living in the county where William and Mary resides?

Grew up seven miles away in the 60s when $3.00 a ticket got you in Johnston Gym to see the Spiders, Bulldogs, then Indians, Colonials, and Paladins. You are correct that Lefty created a stir with recruits he brought in. The program wasn't quite good enough to get by Dean Smith coached UNC teams when NCAA tournament was much smaller.
More recently Davidson leadership hit on a basketball coach and an athletics model that works well for the school. It's in a really nice town, close but not too close to Charlotte. Will be interesting to see if McKillop's eventual successor will be able to duplicate what he has accomplished.

John Gerdy wasn't too bad in the 70s for Davidson. He had that crazy afro and shot from all over the court and scored a ton of points. Very entertaining, but they never won too many games while he was there.

I understand that though W&M is no further from two 1million metro areas, actually between, Norfolk/Hampton Roads and Richmond. Davidson is not in Mecklinburg County (Charlotte) - Davidson is a tiny, rural town- and Richmond and Norfolk have 30 story buildings fwiw. So that’s not a point of difference.
Still begs the question what can W&M do that has helped Davidson. As 75 noted, they had a few strong years under Lefty in the 60s though after that, we were competitive and in the same conference. They are doing something this century which is working and there is no reason W&M couldn’t work that approach.
I’ve heard they put a lot of effort into International recruiting - Europe and Australia.

Davidson is in Mecklenburg County (but maybe you meant not in Charlotte).
There is a big difference in the athletic programs. Tribe fans might not go for the same model. They might go apoplectic if it was suggested.

If they fired McKillop for going 15-17 in 2001, a dozen years into his tenure, you'd never know the name of the school.

McKillop coached 5 years before his first winning season at Davidson and 9 years before his first title and trip to the NCAA tournament. If they kept him after his first four losing years then 15-17 wasn't going to cost him year 12.

Nope, his first was Dane's first with us. Might have overlapped in recruiting though.
Coach Fischer still follows him on twitter. The link Mr J just posted says WM has contacted him - I assume that’s Fischer since none of the assistants follow Johnson. Johnson’s coach at Episcopal, who seems to be the one fielding inquiries, said a lot of schools have asked about Johnson so it’s nice WM was mentioned explicitly in Slater’s tweet and was not relegated to the “others” category.

Johnson is a Virginia rooted guy, though he is listed from Germantown, MD. Spent his high school years at Shaver's old stomping ground Episcopal. Johnson's dad played at Richmond in the 80's. If he does spend a lot of his time in the Germantown area, that is the area Yuri Covington is from. Good chance that they know each other. The other listed suitors for his services are from parts far and wide from his familiar base of operation. Guess it's to be seen if that is even a factor.
