So NMSUpistolPete, how do things look this year compared to other year?Anything out of the ordinary or just business as usual per the last few seasons? I always look at all of the people entering the portal but never know how many end up staying etc.

Any perspective to share, since you follow this closer than most. Or at least closer than me.

Well obviously, there are more and more players entering the portal each year. With the COVID waiver, a lot of players switch schools last season. However, entrance in the transfer portal is on a pace to eclipse last season's totals. There seem to be two trains of thought with the participants... They are either looking for more playing to time at peer or smaller schools. Or they are chasing conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances by joining traditionally stronger programs.

Do many go to P5/6 level programs that aren’t very strong, presumably to play in a more visible league and against stronger teams? Seems like there would be some lure to that, even it didn’t result in a championship or tourney appearance. I can’t think of examples from the WAC, but I’m sure programs like that are able ti take advantage of just being in a strong league.
