Tournament started yesterday but in Schmolik world it really doesn't start until you know who takes the court 04-jawdrop

The women’s tournament is hard to enjoy because everything that makes the men’s one great they try to eliminate in the women’s. No neutral site games early and a heavy P5 presence at the expense of everything else, no Cinderella wins, etc.

Aloha to SEC champion Kentucky. Eleventh-seeded Princeton led almost the entire game to eliminate the sixth-seeded Wildcats. No joy in Lexington tonight…

That SEC Conference title was an accident. Quite obvious if you watched the end of the game.

The difference between 1 vs 64 in Women's is extreme. Women's doesn't start until Sweet Sixteen (maybe).

RE: 2022 NCAA Women's Tournament Thread
At this point, the top 4 seeds are 14-0. 2 are still playing.
5s haven't done well, they are 0-2 with 2 still playing. 6s are 2-2, 7s are 2-2, 8s are 1-1 with 2 still playing. (update 5s are 2-2, 6s 2-2, 7s 2-2, 8s 2-2)

But most of the upsets were in one bracket where 5,6,7 and 8 all lost. Probably lead to lopsided 2nd round.
In another only #7 lost with a 4 and 5 still playing (update #5 won). In another only #5 lost with #8 still playing (update #8 won). In the other only #6 lost, but 4,5 and 8 are still playing (#8 lost, 4,5 still playing).

3-14 scores 78-71, 74-39, 83-77, 85-51

That 78-71 3v14 score was my alma mater against Iowa St. I never say this, but they allowed ISU to throw elbows like crazy. Two UTA players took an elbow to the face and the refs called a foul on the Mavs. Then I see the Baylor/UNC game and the refs tossed the guy who threw the elbow. Stark contrast.

I’d say that just means the women’s game lacks the depth of the men’s

I’d say the NCAA should stop catering to the P5’s and put a product that would sell.

RE: 2022 NCAA Women's Tournament Thread
The 1st 2 rounds in the tournament are hosted by the top 4 seeds so the chances of one of them getting upset would be really slim. Last year when the entire tournament was in Texas was the year to see it but we also had all of the COVID-19 mess as well.

Also, of the 68 teams in this field, NINE of them have won a national championship.

Compare that to the men's field:

UConn beat Mercer 83-38. It was 63-23 going into the 4th, where they obviously let up. They outscored Mercer 20-0 in the 3rd quarter.

Michigan's 74-39 win over American was 39-13 at halftime.

IU 85-51 win over Charlotte was 64-35 going into the 4th.

South Carolina's 79-21 win over Howard was 60-8 going into the 4th.

Stanford's 78-37 win over Montana St. was 20-0 after 1 and 63-21 going into the 4th.

Texas only won 70-52 over Fairfield, but it was 39-18 at half.

Louisville's 83-51 win over Albany was 48-20 at half.

Baylor's 89-49 win over Hawaii was 72-37 going into the 4th.

NCSU's 96-68 win over Longwood was 42-21 at half.

Iowa kept up the pressure on Illinois St. in their 98-58 win leading by 6, 14 and 27 after each quarter before the final margin of 40.

Most of the routs were far bigger routs than the final score indicated.

One of the closest, LSU's 83-77 win over Jackson St. was a 41-28 LSU lead before they relaxed in the 3rd quarter and got outscored 30-16 and had to win the game in the 4th.

The ISU-UTA 78-71 game was the only one that was toe to toe the whole game as UTA lead by 8 in the 1st and by 6 at half before ISU took the lead. But it was tied with 5:30 left and a 3 point game with 1:48 left.

Kaitlyn Clark and Iowa out of the NCAA Tournament. So much for lack of upsets.

Women's basketball score: 31-18 in the 4th quarter. If women weren't playing, I'd think it was football. And one of the teams is the #1 team in the country. Well we know their defense is good. But I can't talk bad about Dawn Staley.

South Dakota (10 seed) lead Baylor 16-4 after one and is up 34-23 at halftime.

USD was 28-5. They lost 2 of their first 6 to South Carolina and 3 bottom dwellers in the P6 (Oklahoma, Northwestern, Texas A&M), but rolled through their remaining schedule easily with just a loss to runnerup South Dakota St.

Quick look at the stats. Baylor had 11 shots, made 2 and had 10 turnovers in the first quarter. There was only 1 foul shot in the entire first half by either team. South Dakota seems to be off to a good start in the 2nd half. Maybe be another bad day for Baylor.

Final-Wichita Region
10 South Dakota 61
2 Baylor 47

I don't keep up closely with the women's game, but I know both South Dakota teams dominate the Summit League.

I looked at the standings. Both were 17-1 and USD beat SDSU in the tourney final.
USD might be underrated based on their slow start this season (2-4 with losses to South Carolina and 3 weak P5 schools). They dominated their Summit opponents. They're 27-1 over their last 28 games.

Still can't figure out how Baylor lost Kim Mulkey. If you're Baylor, you do whatever it takes to keep her around.
