Well if the jerseys don't have Memphis on it I don't watch. It could be UT vs Ole Miss in the championship and wouldn't watch.

College athletics at the highest level has been ruined. No turning the clock back.

RE: New age of college sports
It's been a long time since I agreed with so many people in the same post. College sports have become so disheartening. In so many ways, it's become what turned me off of pro sports about 45 years ago--lack of loyalty to the team due to selfishness, etc. And, yet, like so many, I can't give up on my team, our team: The Tigers!

Oh Lord. You are one obsessed little man. Is there any topic that you are comfortable discussing without turning it into a political debate?

In this day and age almost everything is tied to politics. Only those with their heads buried in the sand fail to recognize that.

Yeah, but politics spoils everything it touches, including sports. It’s a shame.

I'll wait and see what occurs over the next couple years but I already feel like I'm losing interest in college sports. Changes like the transfer portal and NIL. I understand why players may want money or why a player may want to transfer but there other issues created by these changes.

Agree completely. I have little energy left for this dumpster fire. When the players on the Grizzlies are more likely to be back next year than a college starter, there is a real danger of nobody giving a crap anymore.

There were good ways to get student athletes well deserved stipends, but $8,000,000 contracts while other players get nothing is not it.

Oh my gosh - that is absolutely correct. Some of the other posters will now declare you to be a communist in 3…2…1…. It would be laughable if it weren’t true!! (That some will label you a communist for such views)

Definitely should be a cap on the NIL. Everything is a double edge sword. Athletes will be targeted at a younger age. Wouldn't be surprised to see some athletes on the id channel. One player jealous of another player's success then does the unthinkable

Welcome to the real world. In the NBA, Ja gets a $200 million deal, and another kid get a 2 way contract. That's reality. Your worth is what someone else perceives it to be. Not everybody gets a trophy in the real world.

But the discussion isn’t about the real world. If a player is good enough at that age to rake in $$$ of that magnitude, they should be able to skip college and go get their $$$. In what “real world” do people get free health care, free or low-cost meals? A fair stipend for all would be enough for those that play collegiate sports. Plus, they get access to an education that can help them the rest of their life.

Yes, in real life you get paid for what you bring to the table. But college isn’t real life…yet.

I think we’ll see a settling of dust of some sort and a new norm established. One that will have us all looking back and wondering, how was it ever different. Change is always scary. But those who accept it and adapt are the ones who survive and advance.

I have to disagree. College is every bit real life. When I went to college I didn’t play sports and I was allowed to work and earn money. The GI Bill paid for my college. But that didn’t mean the army didn’t have to pay me a salary and give me food and lodging. I got it all from the army. And I wasn’t prohibited from making money when I got out and went to college.

These players are getting a free education yes. But all of their spare time is absorbed with their sport. It’s a profession whether we like it or not. If they are not allowed to make money on their NIL then it’s no different than indentured servitude.

College football: 7th consecutive season of attendance declines… 2021 was the steepest on record.

I do not see how the transfer portal & NIL reverses this trend.

Karl Marx approves of this message.

The NFL, the most popular & successful professional sports league in the country, has a salary cap & splits league profits equally… so does the SEC.

That being said, players playing at 3 schools in 5 years will ultimately kill fan interest… particularly at schools in the the G5 and bottom third of the G5.

The SEC doe not have - and never has had - a salary cap.
