P5 has left the station. A relic. In fact it's no longer autonomous within that group due to conflicting interest.
It's P2 and then everyone else in D1. Maybe they go to 24 for a total of 48 possibly, but 20/20 model plus Notre Dame as P2 status is more likely. The only reason the P2 keep the rest around throwing a bone to the wishful thinkers is warm ups for the CFP and schedule filler regular season. The G8 is kidding themselves of any national relevance in that system. The money of the P2 will effect all D1 sports programs and the competitive model will digress. It already has. Increasing the field will increase interest for a little while until apathy returns. Same old teams over and over and over beating the brains out of lessor funded programs.
The P2 is smart and will allow their association winning at an over 90% clip. They tolerate lesser funded opponents not for the good of the game as they profess to the media, but for wins, ratings, and money.
The rest is just wishcasting for the G8. Eventually that whole model will have to change.
SEC and Big10 will make $100 mil per team per year. Big 12 will make $50 mil per team per year. Everyone else makes $2 mil to $10 mil per team per year. The current landscape has also been like this with the SEC basically doubling other P5 conference's contract per team. Why was it still called the P5 then?
"Bad things, it's a lot of bad things. Yeah, they wishin' and wishin' and wishin' and wishin' They wishin' on me,"
It's called P5 due to denial. It's suppose to represent autonomy. That group's interest is no longer the same. IE the BIG 10 backdooring their Alliance P5 partners. Man they got abused!
Reality will set in eventually. Does it take 15 natty's in a row by the P2 to beat everyone into reality? I don't know. It may depend on the size of the bone the lessor funded are allowed.
I know this. A $50M difference in funding is big that will effect basketball, baseball, Olympic sports, or whatever. It's real and eventually decisions have to be made addressing competitive balance or your product suffers with the consumer losing interest.
This is a natural business process. Some companies get larger and make more money. The secret is identifying your market and dominate your space with good expense management focusing on profitability.
The demographics have changed and the sport is no longer about an event for alumni to gather.
Difference between 100 mill and 45 mill is a lot smaller than 45 mill and 3 mill.
Cope.
Uhh… might want to check your math again.

Seriously?
Do you not understand relative difference vs absolute difference?

He means as far as funding an athletic department.
That makes more sense.

To be fair there was no indication in that comment that you were implying relativity.
