A look at the greener grass for former Cougars.
Updated for end of the season stats-

Last seasons best player, Brandon Betson transferred to Tulsa. At Chicago State, he was a second-team all-WAC selection … led the team in scoring with a 14.2 average and assists at 3 per game. He started all 32 games and averaged 34.5 minutes and was WAC Player of the Week when he averaged 20.0 points per game on 14-of-27 shooting.

Tulsa finished 5-25, 1-17 AAC. Betson averaged 9 points with 10 starts. He has one more year of eligibility.

Ali Abbou Dibba missed part of Chicago States season due to Covid travel restrictions and injury. However, he got 26 minutes of playing time in his games and was WAC Freshman of the Week.

Dibba transferred to Abilene Christian, who was once had an NCAA tourney win before losing their coach a few years ago. ACU finished with wins in 9 D1 games and finished 10th in the WAC. Dibba scored 9 points and had 3 rebounds per game with 11 starts. Definitely less than the 34 minutes and 20+ points he was often got as a Cougar.

On the women’s side Aaliyah Collins was a Second Team All-WAC, All-WAC Newcomer Team, 5 time WAC Freshman of the Week, and National Freshman Player of the week at Chicago State. She averaged 15 points , 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Her steals per game ranked fourth in the WAC and 33rd nationally, seventh in the WAC in assists.
Scored 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting against Wisconsin
First career double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds at Seattle U.

At Grand Canyon she averaged 8 ppg versus her 15 at CSU. She had been a consistent starter, but plays a lot less than last season.

GCU is at least successful, with a 21-11 record.

RE: Former Cougars
Coreyoun Rushin, who transferred to Tarleton after the 21-22 season played big minutes at Chicago State. As a Cougar, he started all but one game, averaged 10 points and 7 boards in 30 minutes. Season high was 18 points, 15 rebounds

At Tarleton he started just 6 games and averaged 2.7 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10 minutes per game on a team that finished 8th in the WAC and 13-17 in D1 games, with a first round exit in the WAC tournament.

Former Chicago State leading scorer in 21-22, Brandon Betsen has transferred again. After leaving for Tulsa where he played in all 30 games and started the final 9 in 22-23, he’s now on to his 5th college. This time it’s Sacramento State.

The Powers That Be have got to get a handle on this transfer fiasco.

Bryce Johnson, who was a solid player for the Cougars, is now on a UMBC teams who is just 7-16, 315 in the NET. The Retrievers are next to last in the America East.

Brandon Betson is a Sacramento State, who 6-17, and is 323 in the NET. They are dead last in the Big Sky currently.

Ali Dibba is having a fine season at Abilene Christian. Maybe he wanted to play in the NCAA tournament. So far, that’s a big swing and a miss. ACU is 8-13 and 257 in the NET. ACU is in 10th out of 11 teams, so it’s unlikely to even make the conference tournament. Whoops.

If they were looking for better programs, they sure didn’t find them.

Ali Dibba, former Cougar who only played briefly due to eligibility clearance, showed big talent and was WAC Freshman POW, transferred to Abilene Christian after a semester at CSU.

Surprise, surprise, he’s on the bounce again and has entered the transfer portal already. Texas grass isn’t any greener than Cougar green I guess.

That’s the problem with the transfer portal-you’re bringing in people you already know are restless and on the lookout for new things and not into making the best of what is right in front of them.

There probably are four different reasons for moving. 1) Personal reasons (family, getting closer to home). 2) Don't like the coach or the culture at the school. But usually it will be 3) Moving to a higher level school, or 4) getting more playing time, which usually means moving down.
