Your School's P5 wins.
Summer is almost over, but we still have a ways to go before the first athletic contest. UTA has a good history in a couple of sports, but I was wondering about other members of the WAC. What are your P5 wins?

For the sake of keeping things easy, it doesn't matter when you played them, as long as they are P5 now. I don't consider the Big East P5 except in men's basketball. Bold indicates an overall winning record.

That's a nice history for UTA, well done. I have fond remembrances of ACU playing "Arlington State" regularly -- we are sort of neighbors. Easy trips for both of us.

ACU too has a rich history, especially against UT Austin. Just before the Wildcats beat Texas in the NCAA basketball tournament, there was an article detailing the long rivalry between ACU (then called ACC) and Texas. Texas Monthly named Abilene Christian the “Texas Sports Dynasty of the Century” in 1999. I think the Wildcats have the fifth most NCAA national titles of all universities, 57 in division II and 7 in Division I. The nice story below came out the morning before the basketball game when the Wildcats beat the Longhorns in the NCAA "Big Dance." Little did they know what would happen after the article came out.

RE: Your School's P5 wins.
Some UTRGV (and UTPA) games, not a comprehensive list:

Men's Basketball
Way back in the last century we had wins against Indiana, Marquette, Okla St, Arizona, and TAMU. To be fair, I don't think TAMU and Okla St were trying to be serious in basketball back then.

In this century the only one I know of is Baylor, and that was when they were rebuilding after their scandal. IMO our biggest win was against top-25 but not-P5 Air Force back in 2004.

Women's Basketball
WBB has less parity than other sports, upsets are rare and a bottom quarter team will often get doubled or tripled playing UConn or Baylor.

All I can find is a win against Nebraska 20 years ago. We gave A&M a bad scare a few years back but they pulled it out in the last few minutes.

Baseball
Upsets are very common in baseball and we've had respectable teams, so there's a lot here.

Baylor, Kansas St, Mich St, Okla St, Penn St, TAMU, Texas Tech, Arizona, Kansas, UNC, OKlahoma, Texas. Winning records against some of them; we're 20-5-0 against Kansas.

Volleyball
We have a strong program, but haven't been able to schedule many P5's. Maybe it's arrogant to say it, but I feel like we're in the NMSU situation: not good enough to help their RPI but more than good enough that they fear being upset.

Baylor and Maryland in recent years. Beat Texas back in the 70s.

I know ACU won the first seven track and field titles in the SLC. UTA’s best finish to them in that time was third. Even the last two years ACU didn’t win it, they still finished ahead of us.

Surprised the Wildcats didn’t pick up any titles in their second SLC stint.

Noticing that both UTA and UTRGV have racked up a lot of their P5 wins versus Baylor.

I’d be willing to bet there’s more in baseball. In the 1970’s, UTPA versus UT-Austin was pretty common and the Broncs got a few wins on the Longhorns. I think after the team fell off in the mid-80’s until the mid 2010’s, they still have a winning record overall. If UTRGV can get back to dominance, everyone in the WAC becomes better off.

Off topic, but UTRGV's Brandon Pimental signed with the Washington Nationals this month. First MLB placement in some time.

Surprised he wasn’t drafted. He was a good hitter that I could have seen him taken in the 20’s on.

I know the WAC got several P5 wins this year in multiple sports. Anyone want to add what their school has done?

Tarleton beat Boston College in MBB, our first P5 win as a D1 schools. We have beaten Baylor and TCU when we were D2.

Baseball beat Baylor this past season.

I got to thinking about one particular sport over 50 years, maybe 60 years ago. Basketball was not much of a big deal in the old Southwest Conference back then. It was not unusual for Texas schools not in the SW Conference to beat those in that conference. A simple example is how Texas Western (now UTEP) won the NCAA National Championship in 1966. I remember Lamar transitioning into D-1 and winning multiple conference championships. There were two reasons I can remember for the mediocare performance of the SW conference teams: one was just very little emphasis on basketball by the big boys and the other was the delay in recruiting minorities at some schools. I remember going to Texas Tech and thinking it was not much more challenging than a host of other Texas schools. But maybe I am just delusionary... those are dim memories. For sure it is not that way today.

Damn skippy. Tarleton's 2015 Basketball and 2018 Football teams were about as talented as it gets and could have whipped alot if D1 OOC a$$ if given the opportunity. Was excited to hear Whitten say he FINALLY has the most talented team he's ever coached with this years 2023 squad. Tarleton fans know just how bold of a statement that is. Couple that with Mason Miller back dialing up the plays and a totally revamped DL, this could be the real breakout year for our program. Go Texans!

RE: Your School's P5 wins.
Just our recently graduated baseball team players had 9 wins over power 5 teams. This coming year will be a lot of new and younger players as we rebuild for hopefully another good run in baseball. There have been other great wins and of course our historic track and field teams and Olympic gold medals, etc., but my favorite all time is the win in basketball over UT Austin in the NCAA tournament. I went to both schools but bleed purple and white.

Just going to list MBB since moving back to D1, since back in the day Seattle U was a nationally relevant program closer to that "P5" level of that era. SU has a few since moving back up:

2018: Washington State and Cal
2015: Colorado
2010: Virginia and Oregon State
2009: Oregon State by a score of 99-48 (also beat Utah this year, but they were still in the Mountain West).

Still haven't beat Washington since moving back up, though.

Other sports have too, men's soccer is currently #9 in the nation and while I don't follow the soccer program I'm sure with the success they have that there are some P5 wins in there over the years.

Agreed. We could use some Utah ones as well. Heck, the WAC west is under-represented.
