How Does An 18 Team Conference Do A Basketball Tournament?
What I would prefer: Drop the bottom 6 or 10 teams and have an 8 or 12 team tournament over three or four days.
What I expect: They’ll drop only the bottom two teams and have a 16 team tournament over five days.
Insanity: An 18 team tournament over six days.

That middle idea seems like the best compromise between the quantity and quality.
I especially like the fact that it eliminates byes and gets the top teams playing right away.

While I agree with this, you also want to give your bubble teams a chance to pad their win total which is why you give your top teams byes and double byes. Too bad you have to game the system.

It hasn't helped the last 2 seasons.
They need to find a better way to "game the system"

The 8 games in Round 1 would have to be played over two days, with the top 4 seeds playing the first day (giving them a day off between Rounds 1 and 2).
Another option to dropping two teams is to have the bottom 4 play in before the Round of 16.
But I agree I would rather drop the bottom 6 and have a 12 team tournament with 4 first round byes played over 4 days.

RE: How Does An 18 Team Conference Do A Basketball Tournament?
There was talk a few years ago about having some sort of conference tournament mid season as well as at the end. The NBA is doing that now. How about we have four 4-team tournaments, let’s say around Super Bowl weekend. The winners of the four tournaments are automatically in the conference season end tournament. Maybe they get some seeding advantage.
Any takers?

Suppose this season you fall that low. Do you get a new coach at the end of the year?

I don't think you can get 8 games in, in one day, at one arena. 4 is about the most you can do.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1927_South...tournament
In the 1927 format there were 6 games and two byes the first day in a four day tournament.
Let's see:
9:00 AM to 11:00
11:AM to 1:00 PM
60 minute break
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
60 minute break
7:00 PM to 9PM
9:00 PM to 11PM

Yes, but not 8. He has 8 games being played on day 2.

RE: How Does An 18 Team Conference Do A Basketball Tournament?
If you squeeze in 5 games each on the first two days, you CAN play an 18-team tournament (i.e. 17 games) in just 5 days, like this:
DAY ONE
9 v 18
10 v 17
11 v 16
12 v 15
13 v 14
5 teams are eliminated, leaving 13. For simplicity, let's assume the higher seeds all win, in which case you have...
DAY TWO
4 v 13
5 v 12
6 v 11
7 v 10
8 v 9
5 more are eliminated, leaving 8. Now it becomes more conventional (again, assuming higher seeds all win)...
DAY THREE
1 v 8
2 v 7
3 v 6
4 v 5
DAY FOUR
1 v 4
2 v 3
DAY FIVE: championship
1 v 2
- never play more than 5 games per day
- all 18 teams play

I like that better.
When VT was in the BE basketball conference, they had 14 teams and only invited the top 12 to the tournament. VT managed to not make the tournament every year but the last one.

RE: How Does An 18 Team Conference Do A Basketball Tournament?
In the sports of men’s and women’s basketball specifically, the membership determined that for the 2024-25 season, the top 15 teams would compete in the 2025 ACC Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments. In addition to the decision on ACC Tournament play, the men’s basketball regular season will continue with a 20-game conference slate while the women will continue to play an 18-game campaign.
https://theacc.com/news/2024/2/14/genera...lotte.aspx
I guess they figured the last three teams would have a zero chance to get an NCAA invitation anyway. I would prefer 14 or 16 team tournament.

I think it's about the effect on the 7-8-9-10 seeds because wins against the bottom do not help them.
