Jason Isbell - now a Memphis Tiger alumn
Anyone at the show last night? Isbell, who left Memphis 3 hours short of a degree to join the Drive By Truckers, announced he was officially now a Memphis alumni.

Simply attending the University makes you an alumni.

I didn't know the name, but looks like our early years at the UofM overlapped. Took me 10 years to finish. Looks like he has that beat by a bit.

It's not just an honorary degree. He completed a program that the university has, that allows career experience to substitute for a few credits to those alums who are very close to graduation. I think his grad application portfolio of career work was pretty overwhelming - including a few grammys.

Not a fan at all but that's pretty cool.

goldmine magazine list his album top 20 for 2023

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Weathervanes

Thirty Tigers/Southeastern Records

While waiting to film his scenes for Killers of the Flower Moon (in which he plays an in-law to Leonardo DiCaprio’s character), Jason Isbell wrote about half of the songs for Weathervanes. And like the movie, Isbell’s latest album with the first-class 400 Unit delves into some uncomfortable topics and situations. He touches on school shootings (“Save the World”), isolation (“Middle of the Morning”) and memories of a deceased friend (“When We Were Close”). Isbell is as precise and effective with his words and vocal delivery as he is with his guitar. Bandmate Sadler Vaden is an ace guitarist, too, and he and Isbell really strut their stuff in the Stones-meets-Allmans rocker “This Ain’t It.”
